The Call for “Rural Cooking Energy Solutions”
“10 fixes for the planet” – A Newsweek Apr ‘08 article• by environmental thinkers towards making the planet greener/energy
efficient• "Stoves for the masses" one of them.
Inefficient cooking methods ‐ not a trivial problem. 2 billion ‐ cook in rudimentary stoves or over open fires. "A family of five can use three tons of wood a year for cooking," "If that family saves one ton of wood per year, that can translate into more than
a ton of CO2 saved every year for that family alone." Kerosene – a fossil fuel
“Designing technology for diversity and affordability ‐ harder than sending aman to the moon”.
The Call for Cooking Energy Solutions
-Some Declared Statistics -
Address at least 5 of the 8 MDGs that the UN is working to meet by 2015.
Climate Change : Clouds of Pollution Carbon dioxide, Methane and nitrous oxide present in biomass stove emissions Apparently 18% of the problem of carbon emissions is caused by stoves.
Indoor Air Pollution: Health Risk Fourth leading health risk in developing countries. Premature deaths - estimated 1.6 million people each year ; women and
children most affected.
Deforestation: Cooking with wood a significant cause Annual consumption of wood - 10% of wood harvested from the world's forests.

Servals’ “low carbon” cooking products technology
Simply put, our products reduce the net addition of carbon‐di‐oxide into theatmosphere.
Our Kerosene stoves and Kerosene Burners• reduce kerosene consumption by around 30 %;• A carbon reduction initiative; less CO2 is let out into the atmosphere.
The Hybrid cooking stove• is carbon neutral (to the extent of plant oil use) since the
CO2 produced is absorbed back by the plant to produce thesame amount of plant oil.
• Almost finalizing a 100% Plant Oil Stove design. The TLUD biomass stove
• is carbon negative (when the charcoal is added to soil for treatment / Bio Char)• Uses biomass residues like twigs, husks, etc. as fuel –
which are carbon neutral, Thereby reduces deforestation. The Servals Wood stove
• Low smoke stove; is carbon neutral• Superior user friendly features (Flame concentrator, Flame stabilizer)

About the Venus Burner and Servals Stoves
Venus Kerosene Burners- A Snapshot -
Kerosene Burners – Heart of a Kerosene Pressure Stove.
‘Consumable’ in the stove; replaceable every 6‐8 months.
Key component in determining energy efficiency and kerosene consumption in a stove.
Can be fitted on any Kerosene Pressure Stove
Venus Burner- Key User benefits -
• Kerosene Saving• Saves 25 – 30% kerosene over market burners
• Lower cost of cooking fuel;• High thermal efficiency of 64% that results in saving of cooking fuel (almost
25 – 30%)• Chalu market burners have an average thermal efficiency of 45 – 55%
• Safety• No bracing in the heat zone, safe unique single tube design
• Low carbon emission• Emits lower levels of CO2 because of lower kerosene consumption• Emits lower levels of CO because of higher combustion efficiency
• Low Maintenance• Easy to clean• Long life• Less sound
Thermal Efficiency • 65.4% (mandatory requirement by ISI 55%) Report attached (BIS)
Kerosene Saving • 20‐30% over market burners• Proven tests reports attached• Customer testimonials attached
Indoor Air Quality • Significantly lower smoke ; clean burning• Due to high combustion efficiency
Emission in terms of CO, COs and Particulate Matter • Low emission of Carbon Monoxide (CO) which is a recognised health threat for women and children
• Reduces emission of CO2 – a Green house gas by reducing kerosene consumption. A burner saves 2.6 kg of CO2 emission every year.
Recognised as a “low carbon initiative” byInfodev (A global program managed by the WorldBank)

About the Servals TLUD Biomass Stove
Technical ProfileBenefitsProduct CertificatesCustomer Testimonials
TLUD Gasifier Stove- A Snapshot -
TLUD stands for Top Lit Up Draft.
Most cook stoves are Bottom Lit Up Draft. TLUD technology is pursued around the
world since it saves fuel.
• is a stove with a canister• which when filled with fuel (any Dry Biomass
waste like twigs, coconut husks, cow dung, Carpentry waste, etc) and combusted,
• will enable cooking for an average of 30 minutes depending on fuel type
• and produces precious charcoal at the end ; can be used for various commercial applications.
TLUD Gasifier Stove- Key User benefits -
• Pyrolysis technology; • represents an improved biomass stove that burns clean and green.
• Lower cost of cooking fuel;• High thermal efficiency of 39% that results in saving of cooking fuel (almost 50‐60%)• Traditional chulahs only have 9% thermal efficiency.
• Significant saving of Biomass material.• Only biomass residues used; Supports aforestation.
• Versatile Biomass possibility• Converts waste to cooking fuel ( coconut shells, carpentry waste, dry twigs etc)
• Low Maintenance• Made of stainless steel; durable; easy to clean and maintain
• Faster cooking• due to high fire power • no need to monitor the flame during the cooking session
• Reduced indoor air pollution (IAP)• better health for women and children
• Resultant Charcoal • Is of high grade ; 5300 kcals/kg calorific value• Has multiple commercial application.
• Waste heat recovery and smoke free kitchen if Masonry construction with chimney is adopted.• Excels in boiling and steaming application
• boon for all Indian cooking ( cooking rice, dals, vegetables, milk, etc.)
Product Differentiators-How different from other
alternatives- “Generic” differentiators
Saves around 40% fuel Vs a traditional 3 stone stove. Versatility of fuel; Tree felling not necessary. Mitigates problem of indoor air pollution. Environment friendly technology reduces carbon footprint while cooking.
Specific differentiators 2 critical design inventions :
Longer cooking duration Better flame control.
Creating energy streams:Working towards creating energy entrepreneurs who will sell ‘canister sized fuel packets’.
Good addition to Kerosene/LPG Kitchens : Introduce its “water boiling” application in kerosene/LPG kitchens.
Create value stream from biochar : It is possible to design a monetary stream for the household based on the biochar residue
Carbon saving eligibility : If biochar is buried in the soil
A cooking energy
stove
A cooking energy solution; not just a cook
stove
Servals Wood Stove Chulah- A Snapshot -
Stable Flame; no need to monitor : a modified grate that keeps the charcoalburning with a brilliant reddish white color
Superior Flame Quality : brings the flame towards the centreline of the stove. User convenience; no need to blow air manually Adjustable Pot Skirt : Only stove that comes with an adjustable potskirt; protects
the flame from mild wind movements and also improves the thermal efficiency ofthe stove. A one of its kind design – enables the same potskirt to be used forvarious cooking appliances like tawas, frying pans, pressure cookers and differenttypes of vessels.
Adequate firepower : 2 KW fire power ; can be increased to upto 3 KW by adding afew more wood sticks.
Low Smoke Stove Aligned with cooking culture: easy to use; regular chulah Easy Maintenance: Just clean the stove before use,by removing the left‐over ash and any charcoal Durability : stainless steel parts; long life
Servals SubhamWood Stove Chulah
- A Snapshot - We also have a “low cost” economy Wood Chulah ‘ “Subham” that has the same
features and performance efficiencies as our Premium model It has a stainless steel combustion chamber and fuelwood stand, but the outer is a
tin metal alloy.
Tapping the Carbon Market
All of Servals products are eligible for carbon credits by virtue of their low carbonemission.
Servals have explored the feasibility of setting up carbon finance projects for itsproducts.
It can also network with prospective buyers of carbon credit, if a carbon financeproject is set up around its products.
We are happy to share more details like the project protocol, carbon revenuestream etc.
