Introduction
Determination of particle shapeTypes of particle shapePreference of aggregate shape in cement
concrete road
Flakiness index Definition: It is the percentage by weight of particles whose least
thickness is less than three-fifth (0.6) of their mean dimension. Apparatus – IS sieves, weighing balance and standard thickness gauge
Procedure (flakiness index) Sieve the sample as per the aggregate size 100 pieces to be retained in each sieve Weigh the aggregates minus the sieve weight of each sieve (W1) Pass the aggregates through the thickness gauge Weigh the aggregates passing through the respective thickness gauge (W2) Calculate the flakiness index
Flakiness index = (W2/W1) * 100
where,
W1 = total weight of the sample gauged
W2 = total weight of the sample passing through various thickness gauge
Elongation indexDefinition: It is the percentage by weight of particles whose
greatest length is greater than one and four fifth (1.8 times) their mean dimension.
Apparatus –IS sieves, weighing balance and length gauge
Procedure (elongation index) Sieve the sample as per the aggregate size 100 pieces to be retained in each sieve Weigh the aggregates minus the sieve weight of each sieve (W1) Pass the aggregates through the length gauge Weigh the aggregates retained on the respective length gauge (W2) Calculate the elongation index
flakiness index = (W2/W1) * 100
where,
W1 = total weight of the sample gauged
W2 = total weight of the sample retained on various length gauge
