A new study has found treatment with the diabetes drug amylin (or pramlintide) safely improves learning and memory function in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients and reduces the AD pathology in their brains. The find-ings, which appear in the journal Translational Research and Clinical Interventions, also may lead to the develop-ment of a blood test for AD. Currently, lumbar punctures
to detect biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid and positron emission tomography imaging scans are used to diagnose AD. Unfortunately many patients are fear-ful of these procedures and the high cost is prohibitive.

This provides additional evidence for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration strengthening in 2015 an existing label warning that non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in-crease the chance of a heart attack or stroke. NSAIDs are widely used to treat pain and fever from many different long- and short-term medical conditions such as arthritis, menstrual cramps, headaches, colds, and the flu. NSAIDs are available by prescription and OTC. Examples of NSAIDs include ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and celecoxib.
