Engaging“Whether it’s the magical tree lighting in the park, the hilarious Davenport races, the town lining the streets with flags to welcome home a soldier, the Pet Parade, the mingling on First Friday or looking at art in the park — Silverton is not just a town. It’s our town.” — Laura Pemble
There’s lots to do. . .With its rich history, charming downtown and scenic beauty Silverton – Oregon’s Garden City – is an engaging place to put down roots and grow dreams. Historic downtown Silverton combines interesting shops and fine restaurants with entertaining festivals and colorful outdoor murals telling tales from our past. Preservation and renovation projects lace the downtown corridor – like the 1935 Palace Theatre, still a first run house, and the 1885 Mac’s Place, still serving up cold brews to the thirsty. The loving and detailed renovation of the historic 1891 Wolf Building at the corner of Main and Water is another example of how history matters here.

Silverton honors its past in many ways. The Silverton Country Historical Society meets monthly. It welcomes anyone interested in learning about and preserving the town’s history and buildings. 503-873-7070
The Silverton Country Museum, 428 S Water St., offers a look at days gone. Artifacts dating back to the 1850s are found at the 1908 vintage house including photographs, farming and logging artifacts, newspaper articles and more. For hours or to arrange a tour, call 503-873-7070 or 503-873-4529.
“Walking Tour of Historic Silverton, Oregon” gives detailed descriptions of buildings and history. Pick up a map at the Silverton Area Chamber of Commerce, 426 S Water St., next door to the museum.
DINEIf you’re looking for a light lunch, a traditional steak dinner, or Northwest, Thai, Mexican, or Chinese cuisine, there are restaurants presenting entrees made from local ingredients, along with a bakery, wine bar, brew pubs, intriguing food carts and several good coffee houses.
SHOPDowntown buzzes with excitement during the monthly First Friday art exhibit openings, May’s Pet Parade, June’s Strawberry Festival, August’s Homer Davenport celebration and December’s warm and memorable Christmas tree lighting. Chocolate treats, collectibles, books, jewelry, furnishings, electronics and apparel are just some of the offerings in the center of town. From mid-May through mid-October Town Square Park bustles with commerce as farmers meet their customers at the Saturday morning Farmers Market.
RELAXThe Oregon Garden’s more than 20 specialty gardens have gracefully matured, including a Children’s Garden with family-friendly activities, the oak grove with the 400-year-old Signature Oak tree, and soothing water features and vibrant wetlands. The Gordon House adjoining the Garden is the only home open to the public in the Pacific Northwest designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The Oregon Garden Resort at the top of the hill offers complete spa, meeting and wedding facilities.
EXPLORESilverton’s countryside is ripe with history and adventure, too. Family farms, nurseries and wineries offer opportunities to pick berries, apples or peaches, find a Christmas tree, or taste wine made from the grapes of local vineyards. Wineries hold open houses on Memorial Day and Thanksgiving weekends and many are open at other times or by appointment.

Our festivals and events reveal the depth and breadth of our interests as well as a willingness to work together and to share. What a community celebrates says a lot. It focuses attention on what local folks see as important. So, what is it Silverton celebrates? The list is rich, varied and, yes, in some ways inspiring.
We celebrate the arts throughout the year with the Silverton Poetry Festival, the Gordon House’s June celebration of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright and late summer’s Silverton Fine Arts Festival.
We celebrate diversity, heritage and the fabric of our community with the Celebration of Cultures, Homer Davenport Community Festival and by volunteering with our neighbors at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest.
We celebrate love of family – including those four-legged members of our family – with May’s eight-decades-old Silverton Pet Parade downtown, August’s Celebrate Families Picnic in Coolidge-McClaine Park, and December’s Community Tree Lighting and Holiday Family Festival.
We celebrate nature and the earth’s bounty with Earth Day at The Oregon Garden and our Town Square Saturday Farmers Market.
And there’s more... We celebrate our volunteers and community activists with an annual community banquet, and the privilege of being part of a vibrant community surrounded by nature’s beauty with fireworks on Silverton Day at The Oregon Garden.
We welcome and encourage your participation. To join in, turn the page and discover the many ways Silverton is inspiring!

Art provides the vibrant thread that runs through Silverton’s tapestry. Painters, players, poets and musicians all take a turn at center stage in community life.
First Friday is a festive monthly event as galleries open new exhibits and host evening receptions. Downtown fills with people wandering from venue to venue to see what’s new, chat with friends, and dine.
In August, the Silverton Arts Association fills Coolidge-McClaine Park with art in a variety of mediums with the Silverton Fine Arts Festival. This juried show welcomes more than 80 artists to display their work. Music and the scent of tantalizing food fill the air and hands-on activities in a relaxed atmosphere bring out the artist in everyone.
For those who love live performance there’s Brush Creek Playhouse, presenting plays in an intimate setting. Founded in 1975, the theater group has performed the works of both well-known playwrights and local authors. The theater, an 1888 one-room schoolhouse, was donated to the group by the Howell Prairie Farmers Association.
Each June, the Missoula Children’s Theater rolls into town to teach local children about the theater and the joy and discipline of producing a play together.
Poets take center stage during the Silverton Poetry Festival, which includes readings at the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Gordon House at the Oregon Garden as well as readings throughout downtown by poets, both published and novice.
In August, Silverton salutes favorite son and cartoonist Homer Davenport, whose pen and wit brought low the politically mighty during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Cartoonists compete annually in an international contest held in his honor.

“Art is at the core of this town’s history, and while the desire to experience and create art is within everyone, Silverton is unique because it nurtures that desire and people gravitate to its open arms. Silverton is an oasis for artists and art lovers.” — Stacy Higby

Growing
It’s a feast for the eyes and food for the soul. Traveling to Silverton, the journey leads you past farms, vineyards, nurseries and gardens.
Fields of flowers, towering rows of hops, u-pick berry patches, orchards of apples and hazelnuts, rolling hills covered with vineyards… the east Willamette Valley region nourishes the spirit as well as the body.
Many of our farmers are descen-dants of pioneers who homesteaded the land in the 1800s. The talented chefs in our local restaurants pride themselves in knowing the growers and using local offerings.
Each season produces its own harvest: flowers in the spring, abundant fruits and vegetables in the summer, grapes, pumpkins and nuts in the fall, Christmas trees in the winter.

Healthy beginningsAccess to health care is an issue for some small towns, but with Silverton Health at its hub, this community is blessed with an array of medical care. Silverton Hospital has earned distinction as a Top 100 hospital as defined by an independent research organization.
Specialists in the fields of general and secular surgery, plastic surgery, gastro-enterology, urology, podiatry, orthopedics, otolaryngology, dermatology, cardiology and obstetrics practice here. The Family Birth Center is known for a commitment to treating each mother as a VIP. There are classes ranging from preparation for child-birth, to nursing and how to help siblings welcome a new little one.
Physicians affiliated with the hospital also have medical clinics in Mount Angel, Molalla and Keizer and serve as resources for Woodburn Health Center. The Silverton McClaine Street Clinic provides patients on the Oregon Health Plan with quality care.
Silverton is home to several dentists and vision specialists, as well as offices for chiropractic care, physical therapy, and integrative medicine.
Safety in a small town is everyone’s businessThe Silverton Police Department takes a leadership role in developing strong part-nerships with the community and service providers to solve problems. The depart-ment is a full service, 24-hour department. The department also contracts with a domestic violence advocate and a Peer Court coordinator.
While the current Silverton Fire District was created by a vote in 1992, volunteer firefighting has been a community tradition since the “Eagle Hook and Ladder No.1” was formed in 1883. The district protects 106 square miles with five stations, six paid staff and 70 volunteer firefighters. Volunteers receive training, recognition, some benefits, and a committed and involved support group. Volunteers must be 18 or older, live or work near a district fire station, have a valid Oregon Driver’s license, and be able to complete required training. Applications can be picked up at the main station, 819 Rail Way NE Silverton, or call 503-873-5328.
Silverton celebrates familiesSilverton Together is one reason why families celebrate Silverton. Silverton Area Community Aid (SACA) is another.
A community-based nonprofit, Silverton Together has programs that reach out to all generations – infants to seniors. Its programs bring people and services together, whether for learning parenting skills, meeting new friends, or volunteer-ing. Both staff and volunteers serve as community connectors, linking programs to those in need of services, from migrant workers to victims of domestic violence, to middle schoolers in need of a caring mentor.
Silverton Together fosters the efforts of other groups, too, like the Silverton Senior Center or the Indoor Park, as well as nonprofit organizations such as Silverton Area Community Aid. By bringing together businesses, government, clubs and individuals, Silverton Together has been a guiding, nurturing force in developing activities including May’s Celebration of Cultures Day, June’s Free Fish Day, August’s Families Community Picnic and December’s Celebrate Families Holiday Festival.
SACA is on a mission: building community, sharing food. Its beginnings in 1950 came when the local railroad station agent and the principal of the elementary school recognized a growing need among low-in-come families. Over the years their efforts evolved into SACA. Today the staff and volunteers are able to provide food and emergency aid to low-income people four days a week. SACA links people to social services typically obtained in a larger city. Its goal is to meet the emergency situ-ations in the community promptly with as little red tape as possible. The entire community has been knit into the organi-zation without sectarian or social bonds.
Silverton Together and SACA are located in the Silverton Community Center, 421 S Water St. Silverton Together can be reached at 503-873-0405; SACA at 503-873-3446.

LearningSilverton High School’s Pine Street campus opened in 2009, realizing a long-held community dream and creating a learning environment some small colleges could envy.
With a capacity of 1,400 students, the school offers an expanded media and technology center, a 600-seat theater, gym with weight training and sports medicine facilities, state-of-the-art science rooms, art rooms with natural light, choir and band classrooms, plus a 30,000 sq. ft. career and technical education building that houses the agricultural classroom along with metal, wood and auto shops.
Silver Falls School District voters, in approving the bond for the school’s completion, delivered an important tool in helping the staff forward the philosophy “Every Child is A Promise.”
A district-appointed committee has reviewed the condition and use of other school facilities and prepared a plan for their future.

Whether it’s a downtown façade improvement party, hanging decorative flower baskets, helping fund a scholarship, or welcoming a new festival or cooperative promotion they have learned that if everyone does a little the Chamber can get a lot done.
