SLAVERY IN AMERICA

In 1619, the first Africans were

brought to the colony Jamestown,

Virginia by the Dutch.

The Dutch actually found those

slaves upon a Spanish ship they had

seized (taken over).

Compared to animals

No considered human

Were not allowed to read or write

Couldn’t leave the plantation without permission of the slave master

Beaten almost daily

Note allowed to vote

Treated as property

Were not allowed to defend themselves against their slave owner

TREATMENT

Slaves were often brutally punished

for misbehaving.

Punishments included: whipping,

branding, being sold, gagged

(silence), and other torturous

methods were used.

PUNISHMENT

A network of black and white abolitionists between 1816 and the end of the

Civil War who helped fugitive slaves escape to freedom

• Union States VS Confederate States

• Bloodiest American War (750,000 people died approximately)

• Union offering slaves the promise of not being returned to their mastered

• Emancipation Proclamation (September 22, 1862) by Abraham Lincoln

which freed slaves in seceded states

• It was not until 1865 that slavery was officially over

• End of the Civil War 1865

• 13th amendment abolishes slavery in United States of America
