Richard studied a Bachelor of Science majoring in Microbiology and Zoology, followed by an Honours year in Microbiology and Molecular Biology. He then completed a Bachelor of Veterinary Science at the University of Pretoria. Richard joined a small animal referral practice and started working as a referral veterinarian while studying for a Masters in Veterinary Medicine. Two years later, Richard was employed by the University of Pretoria as a Lecturer in Medicine. During this time, he completed a Residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine through the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. After a short stint in private specialist practice, Richard once again heeded the clarion call of academia and joined the medicine team at Massey University. He is now based at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia, as a Senior Lecturer in Internal Medicine.
DR RICHARD BURCHELLBSc (Hons), BVSc, MMedVet, DECVIM-CASenior Lecturer in Internal Medicine
After graduation from the University of Bern in Switzerland in 2002, Julien undertook a rotating internship in the same institution from 2003 to 2004. Following this, Julien completed his 3 year medicine residency, which was a joint program between the University of Bern and of Louisiana State University. Afterwards Julien joined the University of Liverpool as Clinician teacher at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital for 2 years. He then worked as a Consultant in Small Animal Medicine for IDEXX before undertaking a PhD at the University of Melbourne. His PhD is on gastro-intestinal disease and monitoring of animals on treatment with immune suppressive drugs. Currently, Julien works as a lecturer at the University of Melbourne. He teaches final year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students during their clinical rotations in small group and delivers formal lectures to third year DVM students. Julien also supervises resident training to become small animal medicine specialists. Julien’s main interests in medicine include gastrointestinal disease, nephrology, endocrinology, and haematology.
DR JULIEN DANDRIEUX B.Sc. VETMED DACVIM
Ann graduated from the University of Queensland in 1997 and worked in general practice in Melbourne and the UK before returning to the University of Queensland Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Ann moved to the US to pursue a residency in small animal internal medicine at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, completed her Masters in veterinary medicine and passed her internal medicine exams at the end of her training program in 2006. She was awarded her Diplomate in Small Animal Internal Medicine by the American College of Veterinary Medicine in March 2007. Ann was awarded the Katie McAllister Compassion Award for compassionate care of her patients and returned to Australia to Veterinary Specialist Services (Brisbane). Ann loves teaching and in 2013 led the small animal medicine referral service at UQ, completed a teaching qualification and taught both veterinary technology and veterinary students. Ann re-joined VSS in 2017 to mentor in the VSS Residency Program. The only program in the country with a dedicated academic resident mentor Ann’s current areas of interest are; endocrinology, urinary tract disease, non-invasive diagnostics and veterinary education.
