“Theology is disciplined reflection on the contents and meaning of the Christian faith. ‘Disciplined refection’ means: the art of thinking deeply and methodically. Theology, in other words, is one way to do what Jesus told us to do: love God with our minds. In this sense, theology is not optional for the church. It is true that our relationship with God depends on humble trust and openness, not on having a degree or an approved list of the ‘right answers.’ But it is equally true that there is no virtue in thoughtless faith. The challenges the church faces call us to bend all our gifts and energies, including our best thinking, to the task of expressing our faith in creative, life-giving ways.”
