Update on the St. Vincent de Paul Clubhouse, by Susan McLeod
I joined the ministry team of the South Boston Seaport Catholic Collaborative (SBSCC) as fi-nance and operations manager in October of 2015. Soon after my arrival, I visited all the
properties belonging to the collaborative. One of the first places I visited was the “Clubhouse”. At that time the clubhouse was the home of the St. Vincent de Paul church of-
fices. I soon learned the history of the many ways that the clubhouse has been used to serve the people of St. Vincent’s and South Boston.
The clubhouse was built in the late-19th century. That would make the clubhouse over 100 years old. I have seen a picture from long ago of a high school graduate standing outside the
clubhouse suggesting that it may have once served as a school. Over the years it has been a gathering place for children, teens, young adults, and families. The clubhouse has been a
home for CYO dances, After School Gatherings, Religious Education, Bingo, Christmas Par-ties, Bible Study, and Communion Breakfasts. The St. Vincent Neighborhood Group, the St.
Vincent’s Parish Council, Book Club, Legion of Mary, Holy Name Society, and The Vincent de Paul Society have all called the clubhouse home. The clubhouse has been a refuge of hope
and compassion for our neighbors and friends seeking recovery from addiction and needing help from the food pantry. Many came to the clubhouse to pray at Mass during those days
when the church was undergoing repairs. I have heard that everyone loved Mass at the club-house because it was so quaint and filled with so much spirit.
Learning the history of a building tells you so much about the strength and hope
and faith of the families that called that building home.
On my first visit to the clubhouse I also learned of the toll that the years have taken on the building. For the past three years we have all witnessed the building continue to deteriorate.
The plumbing and the heating systems are in severe disrepair. As the woodwork has aged, windows have begun to fall away from the wall and onto the ground outside. Safety inspec-
tors determined that the building was no longer safe and, on December 31, 2017, the club-
house doors were closed and the last remaining ministry, the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry, was moved to Monica’s Kitchen at St. Monica-St. Augustine church
(Monica’s Kitchen continues to serve the St. Vincent community by our weekly dis-tributions and will even deliver to those who cannot come to St. Monica’s.) On Janu-
ary 14, 2019 the clubhouse was condemned by city inspectors.
The St. Vincent de Paul Finance Council and the ministry team of the SBSCC have made the difficult but necessary decision to tear the building down. Through the generous donation of
professional demolition services, the work will be done at no cost to the parish. After the building has been removed, the property will be filled in and the area will be fenced off. This
will make it a safer environment for the neighborhood as the Finance Council, Pastoral Coun-cil, and Collaborative ministry team continue complex discussions about the mission of the
Catholic Church in the “lower end” and the future development of all of our properties.
This is yet another sad moment for those who call St. Vincent DePaul parish their spiritu-
al home. The building has been a great blessing to generations of families. As those beautiful memories are held close to the heart and as clubhouse stories are shared with friends and family, we pray that God will continue to bless all those who, over the years, have entered the clubhouse. We pray, too, that the Holy Spirit will guide us
as we seek renewal and rebirth of the Catholic community of South Boston. Togeth-er, let us build a new spiritual home for all those seeking grace, peace, health,
friendship, hope, and the blessing of a community of kindness.
