Successful Integration Efforts

• Establishing HL7 bridge between electronic dental record and electronic medical record.

• Implemented clinic-wide no-show policy.• Patient referrals between medical and dental team.• Shared responsibilities between medical and dental

assistants.• Bilingual staff with same designation (i.e., MA).

• Medical and dental represented at quarterly SBHC, project team, and CQI committee meetings.• Community representation via parent participation.

• Promotion of all clinic services at school and community events.

Challenges to Integration

• Additional costs for HL7 interface set up and clinic staff training.

• Becoming Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal provider (SBHC non-FQHC status; application process).

• Staffing (DDS, FNP, receptionist).

Strategies Used to Address Challenges

• Appropriate budget allocation towards Dentrix/PrognoCIS HL7 interface.

• Contacting current Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal providers and representatives for assistance, attending webinar and seminar, using integration worksheet’s sustainability as a roadmap.

• Referral protocol for restorative care, working with new FNP, seeking full-time receptionist with billing experience.
