Joint Industry Solutions Series - Reducing Rig Site Manning via Remote Operations and Automation
The drilling industry had always emphasised safety through meticulous supervision by experienced hands at rig site, and sucient person-nel to avoid fatigue. This approach, together with much-improved safety processes, have seen the numbers of personnel on rigs rise over the years, to such an extent that today, 30% to 40% of rig operating cost comes from manpower.
While safety records improved significantly over the past decades, it has now reached a plateau while the industry looks for another breakthrough. For a few years now, service providers have developed automation technologies, however, the adoption of these technologies has been significantly slow as operators around the world contemplate the risks of reduced manning.
With the current COVID-19 pandemic, another major flaw with increased manning that has presented itself is that our current drilling operations are not designed for social distancing. To guarantee safe working conditions, social distancing is a must and the only way to achieve that goal with current rig designs is to reduce manning by a minimum of 30%.
The inaugural SPE Virtual Workshop: Joint Industry Solutions Series is a platform for the industry to join hands and prepare for the new norm. The workshop will discuss case studies and technological advancement to go into remote operations safely and eciently. The main objective is to create a roadmap for the industry, that will provide micro-solutions to reduce rig site manning by 30% within twelve months in the year 2021. This is in line with PETRONAS Wells Department’s core safety agenda, and we invite the industry to champion the same agenda.
This virtual workshop will tap into the industry's collective technical and commercial creativity to rapidly develop a solution framework, identify existing o-the-shelf micro solutions and piece them together into a detailed blueprint for immediate deployment.

Session 5: Remote Operation and Automation - Completion (Part 1)Session Architects: Suresh Sinnappu, Baker Hughes; Philip Blakeman, Baker Hughes
The session will explore automation solutions that enable autonomous operations in the region and other parts of the world. These solutions will be readily available for integration, and to address value creation and the complexity of their adoption. The session will also discuss challenges faced by completion installations, how technology and automation can address those challenges, and help to remove and/or reduce the complexity of the current utilised methods. The fundamental plan is to explore technology solutions that can be implemented to reduce complexity, and to look at recent case histories of remote operations to better understand best practices in order to leverage meaningful implementation moving forward. The expectation is to identify key areas where completion installations can be simplified, which in turn would open additional opportunities for remote operations with an acceptable risk profile.

Welcome Remarks
Session 1: Operators’ Experience to Reduce Rig Site Manning through Remote Operations and AutomationSession Architects: Intan Azian Abd. Aziz, PETRONAS; Hazlan Abdul Hakim, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd
This session will invite operators to share their real-world experience in reducing rig site manning via remote operations and automation. The speakers will discuss how the concept was developed, the risks assessment process, the preparation works, and the challenges they encountered when implementing the remote operations activities. The session will explore the benefits from implementing these remote operations or automation approaches. The case studies will also address key areas related to risk management, infrastructure such as connectivity and latency, data management, and operational limitations, and regulatory and governance issues. The expectation is to encourage more learnings and best practices to better navigate the processes of reducing rig site manning via remote operations and automation, as a new normal, to create value.
Networking Break
Session 2: Connectivity Enablers Session Architects: Amanda Studebaker, Baker Hughes; Nurfitrah Mat Noh, Schlumberger; Looi Lai Kheng, PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd
As the industry continues gaining interest in automating rig activities and/or performing more tasks from remote locations, technologies are gaining more attention and importance to enable network protection, data security, fast processing, fast connection speeds, and eective communication channels. These are now seen as part of a crucial foundation for the success of automation and remote operations. This session will discuss both, the infrastructure for rig connectivity and novel hardware or software solutions, and their interoperability to enhance communication between machines, rig site operators, and remote personnel.
Networking Break
Session 3: Remote Operation and Automation - Drilling (Part 1)Session Architects: Razien Ali, Halliburton; Rafi Saad, Halliburton
The session will explore automation solutions that enable autonomous operations in the region and other parts of the world. These solutions will be readily available for integration, and to address value creation and the complexity of their adoption. This session will share technological advancements in the world of drilling automation and remote operations, where discussions around key learnings and challenges from early adopters will be the highlight of the session. Key areas to be discussed are:
• Solutions developed based on industry-wide needs and challenges
• Transforming the way we work to make a quantum leap in productivity
• Apply digitalisation to seamlessly connect drilling, subsurface, and production with benefits of achieving balance in the people, process, technology triad
• Reducing labour and capital investment through automation and self-learning processes
