******* SPECIAL EDITION : ISM GIVES BACK! *******
BOLIVIA PHILANTHROPY GROUP
Led by Tessa Cournoyer (12A), the ISM Bolivia group raised
over €1,419 through numerous bake sales which was
matched by an anonymous donor and resulted in €2,850
being sent in support of student scholarships in Bolivia.
Well done Tessa and colleagues in independently running
this fund-raising effort!
The Early Years Student Council together with Mrs Ragi led
the students in running a Christmas programme for all the
children to do a weekly chore chart, earning money which
they then donated to
buy solar lamps for a
Primary school in
Tanzania where
electricity is very
limited. Thank you
Student Council for
taking the lead in helping students with this great programme!

EARLY YEARS TANZANIA SUPPORT FOR SOLAR LAMPS GROUP
In collaboration with the ISM Giving Committee, the
Primary School Student Council organised an
educational toy and game collection to help less
fortunate children in Nice at Christmas-time.
Primary School students were invited to donate a
toy or a game (in excellent condition). These were
subsequently taken to the Centre Maternel in Nice
where the staff carefully selected which toy or game
would be most suitable for each child. The Student
Council representatives presented their project in
Assembly, produced some beautiful posters to
advertise the event and worked very hard to make
this project a great success!

PHILANTHROPY CLUBS
Over 40 students in Middle and Secondary school
are currently participating in Philanthropy Clubs.
The groups offer support to ‘Namaste’, ‘Mission
Enfance’, ‘Red Cross’ and ‘Nice Centre Maternel’.
We celebrate the students who have taken a lead
in volunteering with these organizations.
RED CROSS GROUP
Before Christmas break, the Red Cross Group, Tessa Cournoyer, Catherine Khatsenkova, Ayesha Le Breton,
Ekaterina Heim, and Helen Whelan as the teacher coordinator, organised an
extremely successful collection of clothes and other items for the Ventimiglia
refugees, ranging from winter blankets to tinned food. These items were then
taken to the Red Cross in Ventimiglia, who were very grateful.
The Group also works with a Monaco Retirement Home, Résidence A
Qietüdine. In April, the whole team went there and joined in a game called
“Stimule T’oie”, invented by volunteers of the French Red Cross. They played
with a group of residents and some Monegasque Red Cross volunteers; it was a
great success! At the end, every resident was a winner and received a Red
Cross gift. This was a very rewarding experience for all involved. Tessa Cournoyer, Year 12 student and Red Cross volunteer
Rosabelle Baysan and Julia Strouk volunteered to
support Namaste, a philanthropy project
building schools in Nepal and providing
earthquake disaster relief. These students also
assisted the organization in its event at the
Yacht Club of Monaco. They earned praise for
their enthusiasm and professionalism.

During one of the lunchtime monthly
meetings of the Philanthropy Club, Mr
Oxley inspired the students with his
stories of the 5 years he spent as a
teacher in Botswana. He noted among
his many stories and experiences how
much of a sense of community
impressed him while he was there. His
original 3 years, he extended to 5 in
order to continue following his group of
motivated students into their high school
years. All the students found his stories
and pictures compelling and very
moving.
The student group was key in
helping the organization get their
annual mail sent off in time and the leaders of
Mission Enfance were impressed by the
speed and quality of the work of our students!
Last November, our Philanthropy Club
Group went for a first visit to the Centre
Maternel in Mont Boron, in Nice.
We met the directrice and her team
who showed us the house and the
facilities, and how they work to help
these young women and their babies
live a better life. We brought them high
chairs and toys (thanks to Emilie
Evans), but our long term target is to raise money to help them buy a
cover from the sun for the playground, as it is the only secured outdoors
area for the children. Everything is very well-organised but it is quite clear
that they need a lot of financial support.
How did we feel? It was very emotional and we all realised how lucky we
are and we are now even more motivated to carry on with our
philanthropy project and we really
hope to reach our goal.
Thank you Laura, Lisa and Tiziana
for giving us the possibility of having
a better understanding of the life
difficulties some young people
encounter.

OCEAN GROUP: FIGHT AGAINST SEA AND OCEAN POLLUTION

Our recycling project in the Early Years has involved collecting bottle tops for the
« Bouchon d’Amour » association. We hope to collect
enough bottle tops to help buy a wheelchair for a disabled child. For
every ton of plastic tops we raise we will earn €210. The bottle tops,
once collected will be sent to the depot in Nice. This project will involve
all our boys and girls in the Early Years and we are asking them to
collect plastic bottle tops and bring them into school, depositing them in
the recycling classroom box. Our Class 3 Student Council have made
the recycling boxes and are in charge of emptying the bottle tops each
week. They made a wonderful presentation in our assembly on March
25th. We will keep you posted on how we get on. Thanking you for your
support! Caroline Ragi, Head of Early Years
Fed up with all those small, loose coins lying at the bottom of your purse or weighing down your pockets?
Want to make sure they get put to good use? The Primary School students are able to help you out! Each
year, in January and February, the Student Council representatives organise a collection of copper coins,
in collaboration with the ISM Giving Committee and the children’s
charity La Fondation Hôpitaux de Paris
-Hôpitaux de France. This year, the
Primary School raised over €640! It
took us rather a while to count it all,
and quite a few trips to the Post Office
with some rather heavy bags! We hope
to raise even more next year – watch
this space!

EY RECYCLING PROJECT
PRIMARY SCHOOL COPPER COIN COLLECTION
With the help and support of Charlotte Cowley, Science and Earth Science
Teacher, The Ocean Group produced and sold home-made ocean-themed
Christmas cards. The funds raised were given to the SOS Grande Bleue
association in Saint Jean Cap-Ferrat They also attended the Blue Ocean film
festival at the Oceanographic museum, and took part in the Monaco March for
Climate which was supported by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II.
This trimester, their aim has been to raise awareness of the dangers of plastic in
the seas and oceans and they have produced information posters which everyone
can see all around the Middle School. The students will also be presenting this
worthy cause at assemblies in the hope of recruiting more members among the
Secondary School students.
For the final trimester, they are aiming at organising a beach clean-up as soon as
spring arrives and the weather is better. Hopefully this challenging project will see
very quickly the light of day and will contribute to sea and ocean protection and awareness!
Congratulations to Maxim Alexeev who was elected student leader.

LES ENFANTS DE FRANKIE
The Primary School Student Council organised a Bake Sale on Wednesday 11th May to help raise money
for the Monaco children’s charity, AMADE: l’Association Mondiale des Amis De l’Enfance, again with the
support of the ISM Giving Committee. The Student Council representatives, who had been looking
forward to this event since the beginning of the school year, designed some attractive, eye-catching
posters to display around the Primary School.
On Wednesday morning, Mrs Duncan’s
classroom was filled with the aroma of freshly
baked cookies and muffins. At break time, the
primary classes, a few Middle School students
and some teachers eagerly filed into the
classroom, ready with their 1€ and 2€ coins,
and carefully chose a tasty treat or a glass of
healthy fruit juice. The amount raised
surpassed the estimates of most students in
the Primary School – an amazing €354, thanks
to the efforts of the teachers, students and
parents of the Primary School.

PRIMARY SCHOOL BAKE SALE
On Wednesday 2nd March 2016, the
Middle School Student Council hosted
over 35 children from the local area, in
collaboration with Les Enfants de
Frankie. The association supports
disadvantaged and sick children in the
region, and ISM hosts an annual
event whereby our visitors and ISM
students can unite as one, for an
afternoon of fun, games and much
laughter.
We set up a ‘game-show’ style afternoon and all children were
divided into their 4 communities – Amiko, Rafiki, Nakama and
Takoda. This showed inclusion, team-spirit and open-
mindedness, all important qualities within ISM and the wider
community.
Les Enfants du Frankie and ISM enjoyed a goûter together at
the end of the afternoon, with students swapping contact details
and making new friendships.
