Spectral Industries history • TNO’s first instrument development project addressing Raman and LIBS was the combined instrument for ExoMars: 1st flagship mission of ESA’s Aurora program to Mars.

• It’s objectives were to search for signs of present or past life on Mars.

• TNO built fully functional spectrometer but it was never launched due to political reasons.

• Spectral Industries now takes over the spectrometer part of the Mars instrument for commercialization.

Spectral Industries spectrometer is 6 times more light sensitive then nearest compatible and 100 times more sensitive then most alternatives.

Spectrometer performance: Resolution • FWHM resolution @ 257nm = 150pm.

• This is slightly bigger as the nominal design, due to the blurring of the ICCD.

Spectrometer performance: Temperature

Wavelength shift: <0,005 nm/K. Lowest shift for a commercial available echelle spectrometer

Spectrometer performance: Dynamic range • Maximum signal just before saturation: 96.8700 counts.

• Noise: ~100 counts.

• Dynamic range: 968700/100=9.687

• 2-5 times higher dynamic range as linear array camera’s.

Spectrometer performance: Stray light • Stray light analysis without taking into account AR coated optics.

• Stray light: 10-4.

Spectrometer performance: Crosstalk • Black lines in the image indicate the center of the two closest echelle orders.

• Red area is a spectral line.

• Peak height vs. background level 5 pixels away from next order center: 3x102.

Spectrometer status • Prototype ready. Production can start in 4 months.

• UV version in development. (Spectral range: 175-500nm, resolution: 50pm)

• Translate image to spectrum software available in Matlab with user friendly GUI.

• Calibration software available that involves manual actions.

• CMOS camera to replace ICCD is under development.
