The Chapter was granted charter on April 19, 2013.
Mr. Chetan Bhavdankar’s Talk
Chetan Bhavdankar, an under graduate student from Fergusson’s College, Pune and an Indian
Academy of Sciences summer intern at the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics,
kick started the SPIE student activities of 2014-15 by giving a lecture on introductory
astronomy and astrophysics with an emphasis on sky gazing and lens making. The talk was
conducted on the 21st of June 2014 and was the first SPIE event conducted by the chapter.
Dr. Junichiro Kono’s visiting lecture
As a part of the SPIE’s visiting lecture grant Prof. Junichiro Kono from Rice University,
Texas delivered a talk on Optics and Photonics with carbon nanotubes on 20th July 2014.
Prof. Kono’s talk was arranged and organized by the SPIE Manipal University Chapter and
the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics for the Dr. T. M. A. Pai Endowment Chair
Lecture. Students, faculty and research scholars of several departments form Manipal
University attended the lecture.
Asia Student Photonics Conference, Kolkata 2014
The SPIE – MU Chapter was a collaborator of the Asia Student Photonics Conference held at
IISER, Kolkata, India in July 2014. Three of our student members, Uday Gowda, Madhura
Somayaji, and Vanessa Rodrigues attended this event. Out of these members, Madhura
Somayaji, a MSc photonics student and a SPIE member won a runner up award in student’s
oral presentations.
B.Sc. Interaction Programme
Modulation: This initiative by the SPIE Manipal university Student chapter, with strong
support of Prof. Santhosh C.- Head of department and Mr. Ajeetkumar Patil-Advisor to SPIE
chapter was aimed to enhance Optics and Photonics awareness of students pursuing
Bachelors. The audience comprised students mostly from several local colleges from Udupi,
Karkala, Kallianpur and Mangalore.
Launched on 24th of January, 2015 the event was inaugurated by Prof. Hebbar, Director of Manipal University’s School of Information Sciences (speaker in top photo).
The main session began at 11 a.m. with the Introduction to Optics and Photonics followed by
an Introduction to Research and the SPIE Manipal University Student Chapter. With an aim
to maximize student interaction with us, this talk was split among four speakers- Ms. Surya
Harikrishnan (top left), Chapter Vice President Mr. Ravishankar Sugumar (top right), Mr.
Praveen Devangad. (bottmo left), and the chapter President, Mr. Samvit Menon (bottom
right).
The Afternoon sessions comprised Research Lab visits where the students were exposed to
fields of Linear and non-linear optics, spectroscopy and nanoscience. They were also exposed
to the on-going research in the photonics and nanoscience conducted in the department to
maximize student exposure to keep pace with research in photonics in and around the country
simultaneously.
SPIE Member ID Badges
Ms. Vanessa Rodrigues took the initiative and designed SPIE ID cards for all the members of
the SPIE Student Chapter. Each badge includes the name and SPIE ID of the member,
barcode and QR code for contact information of the member and the chapter respectively.
Mr. Prinston Melroy Lewis and Mr. Ravishankar Sugumar took the initiative to design the t-
shirts which is a collage of several fields of optics and photonics that SPIE stands for.
Sample badge and T-Shirt:
Anshu – International Year of Light celebration
As a part of the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics’ celebration towards the
International Year of Light 2015, the SPIE, Manipal University Chapter, organized a one day
event called Anshu – A Ray of Light on the 1st of March,2015.
This event began with a formal inauguration with eminent scholars from leading research
centers creating an air of interest among students across different graduate and post graduate
streams. Following the inauguration ceremony, leading scientists in the fields of photonics
and optics delivered lectures in hot research areas of photonics and nanobiophotonics.
Among the speakers were, Dr.Aditya Dharmadhikari from Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research , Mumbai, Prof. Jagtap from Bhaba Atomic and Research Center, etc.
SPIE Lounge Notice boards
An initiative of the department was to introduce Notice boards maintained regularly
displaying the latest research on optics and photonics, and activities of the Student
chapter.
Mr. Ajeetkumar Faculty Adviser, SPIE Manipal University Chapter had participated in
“Winter College on Optics” at ICTP, Trieste, Italy during 10-21, February, 2014.
