Sports injuries can take you out of commission for months, and both professional
and recreational athletes are at risk. There are certainly some sports injuries that are
more common than others:
Runner’s Knee: A simplied term for patellofemoral pain syndrome, runner’s knee occurs
when the cartilage on the underside of the kneecap becomes irritated and inamed after
the repetitive motion of running. Common symptoms include: pain behind or around the
kneecap, pain that is worse walking downstairs or downhill, and pain that occurs when
bending the knee, including when walking or getting up from a seated position.
Tennis Elbow: This condition is an overuse injury of the arm that ends up causing elbow
pain. Tennis elbow is not limited to tennis players, but can aect anyone who moves the
arm repetitively, including baseball players and bowlers. Common symptoms include:
pain that gradually comes on and gets worse and is located on the outside of the elbow
and pain that is worse when squeezing an object.
ACL Injuries: The ACL is located in the knee and is one of the four ligaments that help
connect the upper and lower leg bones together. ACL tears and sprains are the most
common knee injuries, and usually occur when a person comes to a sudden stop or plants
the foot and pivots, like in basketball. Common symptoms include: swelling and pain
shortly after the injury, limited range of motion, and pain when walking.
Ankle Sprain: An ankle sprain is a common sports injury and can happen in any sport.
These injuries occur when the ligaments of the ankle are forced outside of their normal
range of motion. Common symptoms include: sudden pain, swelling, possible bruising,
and pain when putting weight on the ankle.
