The screen asking for account and password was misleading as you needed to direct it system folders.
I want to sent money to Pinal Dave as he saved me lots of time.

Thanks, it was very useful to mewhen on set accounts (page “Service accounts”)were received messages as:“The credentials you provided for the SQL Server Agent service are invalid. To continue, provide a valid account and password for the SQL Server Agent service.”, …
(.. and really presented two same images, see madhan raj note)

BrianG | September 22, 2010 at 1:57 am@VladimirS – I assume you solved your credentials issue since this post? I’m having the same issue now, and I’m a bit stumped. I tried using my own windows domain account, which the msdn docs seem to suggest should work, but I get the same error. Any ideas?

Jose | September 12, 2009 at 2:34 amThis is a good tutorial, but I have not seen anything special about it, since the author is just placed the screen shots of the installation process. I think that it should be much more helpfull if he have explained the steps, why we should select certain options and why we should not select certain options. The explanation of certain options would have helped much more in this tutorial.
Thanks

“Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application.
Key not valid for use in specified state…”
Then if I try to click on the menu Registered Servers I can’t see any kind of tree as in other installations.
I tried to repair Framework and it doesn’t work..

For installing SQL Server 2008 on Windows XP,
one would need XP SP3(Recommended) but minimum SP2,Windows Installer 4.5 and .NET 3.5 SP1
Check out this Article for the same

shifty_1981 | February 9, 2010 at 11:25 pmI seem to remember that when you do a SQL install it creates certain groups in Active Directory (in a domain environment). However my account does not have permission to create such groups. I am a local admin on the machine (my domain account is) however. Is this a concern? Exactly what type of permissions are required or recommended for the SQL Server 2008/2005 installer to be run as?

One of the best way of handling this is to install it with a local account first.
Once SQL Server installed, now you can change the service account by changing the user at services.msc
Change the service account, stop & start it. Its now working with your service account.

Gopal | February 21, 2011 at 2:20 pmHi Pinal,i am using windows 7 home basic 64 bit os. I’m having a shocking time trying to install SQL Server 2008 on 64bit Windows 7. When I run setup.exe, I get the following error message:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installation has failed.
SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed
Things I’ve tried:
I’ve checked and double checked. I do have .NET Framework 3.5 installed, with SP1I’ve read about a missing Windows Installer 4.5 installation producing the same error. Win7 comes with Windows Installer 5, which hopefully satisfies this requirement, as I’ve tried to install 4.5 and it won’t let meBurning the ISO to DVD and installing from there.Installing on an XP machine using the same ISO. This works, so the ISO must be fine.Considering SQL Server 2005, but it really needs to be 2008 for the project.
Update I could install SQL Server Express, and then SP1, but couldn’t upgrade to Enterprise. If you’ve come across this issue, or know how to fix it, I’d love to know.

I have a quick question. I followed all your instructions and installed all the components (i.e SSAS, SSRS, SSIS, BIS etc) because I need to study them. When I tried to view my Report Server/Reports in my browser, it prompts me for username and password. I don’t remember setting one up and I tried all possible username – password combinations I could think of but to no avail. Could you please tell me which username – password I need to enter so that I could view my Report Server/Reports?
Thank you for your time and more power! ^_^

Please post complete question ?
SQL Server Service Account Needs Permissions to specific Folders. So the Account you mentioned when Installing SQl Server, might not have proper permissions, that is why you are getting this message.
You can find here, permissions required for SQl Server Account.

I dont want to install Datafiles on C since its not large enough so I want to store all datafile in Shared location but getting error that it is not a valid drive? does it have to do with read write access?

David Davis | July 22, 2011 at 6:56 pmIf you are trying to install SQL2008 and you also have visual studio 2008 installed with service pack one (SP1) and get the error
“A previous release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 is installed on this computer. Upgrade Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 to the SP1 before installing SQL Server 2008”
Then welcome to the Microsoft beta testing program even if you purchased the faulty software.
With XP the most common solution seem to be renaming the registry keyHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\9.0And replacing ‘9.0’ with ‘9.0Old’ however this does not solve the problem if you are using windows 7 and the only solution I managed to find that worked was to uninstall VS2008 and all the components and to then install SQL2008 and finally reinstall VS2008.

Ramzay | July 1, 2013 at 9:58 pmI have an older PC which I used on some of my projects. The Windows instance got heavilycorrupted on it to the point that I cannot use SQL Server 2008 R2, cannot uninstall it or reinstalled. It became so bad, that at this point I am planning to completely recreate this PC.However, there are SQL Server databases (in fact the whole server instance), which I would like to preserve. I cannot not extract these databases using SQL Server tools, because SQL Server installation is corrupted and tools do not work. I have all the files (mdf, ldf), registry entries (though these may be somewhat corrupted), etc.
Is there a way to move and use (open, attach, or whatever) these databases on another computer with the valid SQL Server 2008 R2 installation?

I have taken a print screen of the missed step while I was installing SQL Server, so if you need the image just email me.
