Dear Parents and Guardians
I would like to welcome everyone
back to the start of Term 2 and I
hoped you all had a great holiday
and were able to spend some
quality time with your family.
Successful student led conferences
took place at the end of last term
and I encourage you to discuss
some learning goals with your
children for the upcoming term.
Please remember that you can
always arrange a meeting with your
child's classroom teacher at any
time when the need arises.
NAPLAN 2019
Students in Years 3, 5 and 7 will be
sitting NAPLAN 15th-24th May
NAPLAN is used by governments,
education authorities and schools to
determine whether young
Australians are meeting important
educational goals in literacy and
numeracy.
It provides a snapshot of your
child’s progress as they travel
through school to see how well they
are learning the skills of reading,
writing and mathematics. It also
provides information to the school
that assist in determining areas for
further development.
In 2019 NAPLAN tests will be
conducted online except for the
Year 3 Writing which will be paper
based.
Staff have been using strategies to
familiarise students with test
conditions and we have been
encouraging all students to
approach the test with a positive
growth mindset knowing that some
questions will be easy whilst others
may be harder. Individual test
results will be available at the end
of term 3, usually around
September and will be distributed
by the school.
2019 SCHOOL PRODUCTION
Bi annually the school holds a
whole school end of year production
held at the Royalty Theatre in
December. The theme and script for
this production was written by
senior students in 2018. Auditions
and planning for rehearsals are
underway . Later this term Kat will
begin teaching each class their
songs ready for practice next term.
Any parents/care givers who would
like to be involved, especially with
costumes, please contact Kat
Katrina.ochan@sa.gov.au or ring
0417142556. Although Term 4
seems a long way off, time goes
quickly and we hope to avoid
the last minute rush!

Easter Raffle
Would like to thank everybody that contributed to the Easter Raffle and especially to Sally for the organisation and the beautifully wrapped prizes. The raffle raised over $2000.
Staff Car Park
Can I remind Parents once again not to park
in the Staff Only car park at any time of the
day or night ! This includes parents picking
their children up from OSHC. The car park is
a very dangerous place and the safety of our
students is paramount. Can I also ask parents
to model road safety by using the pedestrian
crossing and not to cut through the car
park while walking to and from the school as
this is also an extremely dangerous practice.
Thanking you for your assistance.
Finance
Please be aware that you may receive a
statement regarding fees for 2019 and any
outstanding fees. There are still a large
number of fees due from 2018 which are
outstanding and are now due! These funds
are critical for providing the essential
educational opportunities for children.
If you require assistance with fee payments
please make a time to discuss options with
our new school finance officer Debra Kember
or myself. Payments can be made at the
Finance Office 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday –
Friday. Thank you for your cooperation.
Darrin Briggs: Principal
At the end of last term Year 7 Senior Students
attended a Grip Leadership Conference held
in Adelaide.

Welcome to term 2 – hard to believe it’s already May! This
term the preschool/kindy groups will be focusing on ‘What
makes a community’. Earlier in the week the Learning
Inten+ons were sent out in addi+on to the possible
program direc+ons. Although educators introduce the big
ideas, the program direc+on is guided by the children’s
interests.
Reminders:
• Please bring back spare clothes - dona+ons welcome!
• Please dress your child in or bring appropriate clothing
for cold/wet weather/mud play e.g. raincoats,
gumboots, spare change of clothes, etc.
• Please bring back your child’s porColio once read and
shared with your family. We hope you have enjoyed
reading and viewing your child’s learning journey so
far! If your child a4ended Kindy/childcare last year and
your child is currently in Prue or Asta’s group, please
collect your child’s old porColio for your final keepsake
(located near Preschools internal front door in a pile).
Term 2 dates to look forward to:
• Triskills is coming to Preschool, running two physical
ac+vity sessions over both Tuesday and Wednesday
the 28th and 29th May.
• Make up excursion to the Princess Elizabeth
Playground for Thursday children who last terms
excursion unfortunately was cut short (date TBC).
• 2x Recep+on visits (play in Recep+on and play at
Preschool) + Assembly performance rehearsal (song
and date TBC) promo+ng a posi+ve transi+on to
school, a greater sense of belonging, community and
becoming.
• Preschool children (4-5yr old) Assembly performance
(song and date TBC).
Can you help:
• If you haven’t already, please bring in a family photo
to display in our room and for your child to share in
group +me. Children are loving looking at these
photos throughout the day and exhibit such pride and
sense of belonging when sharing about their family.
• We also ask that as part of our inquiry ques+on this
term ‘What makes a community?’ children bring in a
photograph of their home to mount to a wooden
block to be used in children’s construc+on and
imaginary play, when construc+ng roads/towns and
exploring the true sense of community.
As we learn that all families are different, we too will
learn that everyone lives in different types of homes
(houses, apartments, units, caravans, etc.), some more
near than far, and it’s whom makes up a home to be
what’s most important, compared to what it looks like!

apprecia+on)
Thursday 9th May - Preschool closure day
Tuesday 14th May – Mother’s day breakfast (parent
apprecia+on breakfast)

ELC news:
This term in the 0-3 sec+on, we are focusing on
the curiosity, poten+al, and capabili+es of our children. As
educators we see just how capable young children are
when it comes to being the agents of their learning and
nego+a+ng risk. Especially, when they are provided with
the space, +me and opportunity to observe, ques+on,
explore and experience the world. We look forward to
exploring this further together and seeing what the
children can achieve between challenges, risks and opened
end play.
To kick start this focus, we had a
visit from Nature Play SA on
Thursday, even in the rainy
weather that didn’t stop the
children exploring with the
textures and different materials
with such inquiry and wonder.
Kind regards,
Ali Wells - Early
Years Director

NEWS FROM BRONWYN
Welcome back to Term 2 everyone! As everyone is geLng back into the
term rou+ne, it is my good fortune to be able to have some +me off. I will
be away from the Children's Centre from the 6th May returning on Monday
24th June. While I am away Kat Ochan, Community Development
Coordinator and Ali Wells, Director will be available to help you with any
Children's Centre programs or enquiries.
Na+onal Families Week is 15-21 May. This is a great opportunity to spend
some quality family +me together and reflect on what it is that makes your family unique and special
to you. Ask the kids what they think, you might be surprised to hear how your children answer these
ques+ons!
I look forward to catching up with everyone when I return.
Bronwyn Whelan - Family Prac++oner MINI GOLF PROJECT
Sam Abell, a mechanical
engineering honours student from
Adelaide University, will be
working with Mike Hastwell and I
this term as part of the PE and
Technology programs. He is
working on a final year project
redesigning a mini-golf course
(Drummond Golf).
He will be conducting research at
Sturt Street as to how students hit
the golf ball by taking slow motion
pictures of the ball leaving the
stick. No photographs showing
student faces or that can identify
students will be taken.
This information will be used to
create a software design tool
which will be able to predict
putting trajectories for a range of
putting inputs. I think this could
also be a good technology design
project for students that they will
find interesting and engaging.
