CROSS ROADS ST. ANDREW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH NOVEMBER 2015
“Building upon God's Grace through Love, Obedience and Compassion”
We don’t live for ourselves and we don’t die for
ourselves. If we live, we live for the Lord, and if
we die, we die for the Lord. Therefore, whether
we live or die, we belong to God. This is why
Christ died and lived: so that he might be Lord
of both the dead and the living. But why do you
judge your brother or sister? Or why do you
look down on your brother or sister? We all will
stand in front of the judgment seat of God.
Because it is written, As I live, says the Lord,
every knee will bow to me, and every tongue
will give praise to God. So then, each of us will
give an account of ourselves to God.
Romans 14: 7-12 (CEB)
November 1st is All-Saints Day and it falls
on a Sunday this year. As strange as it may
seem, I love All-Saints Sunday. It is a
reminder that we stand on the backs of those
who have served the Lord faithfully and
now reside with Him. Personally, I reflect
on the spiritual presence of my grandmother,
Mildred Berringer. I think of her because
she lived her life in a manner that made it
clear that she lived and died for the Lord.
Her humility and willingness to serve
continue to inspire me and remind me what
it means to be a person of faith. I would like
to take this opportunity to share what she
taught me about living for God.
Mildred was the most accepting person I
have ever met. Even though she lived by the
strictest of moral standards (we couldn’t
even play cards in her house on a Sunday),
she never looked down on people who
disagreed or lived differently. I don’t recall
ever hearing her say a negative word about
another person. Even into her nineties,
Grandma never allowed a person’s race,
religion or differences to deter her from
treating them with gentleness. I see this as
such an amazing God-like quality that we
too often are missing. Regardless, it is
thanks to people like her that the church
continued.
Mildred served more than was served. She
served her church until she physically could
no longer do so. Even then, someone would
always pick her up to attend church. Even
when it was hard for her to here, her
presence was important to her. Upon
Grandpa’s passing, Grandma humbly lived
with her child (my mom and dad) and went
to her daughter’s bible study. I have heard
many people tell me that she always had
something insightful to say after patiently
listening to their disagreements and
struggles. Christians have always sought to
serve more than be served and she modeled
that until the very end.
Mildred accepted change for God. She was
in her nineties when she experienced her
first contemporary service. She didn’t like
it. When someone questioned her, Grandma
said, “Well, it is not my preference, but look
at all the young people! I think it is great if
it brings young people to God.” Instead of
worrying about her preferences, she sought
God’s will first. The church struggles at
times to adapt. Thank God our forefathers
and mothers did not stay stuck in their ways.
The Church has changed and will change.
Our message is more important than the
manner in which it is proclaimed. Thank
you All-Saints for passing on that gospel
message! Now let us follow in their paths
faithfully.

Time: 7:30 AM
Location: St. Andrew UMC - Fellowship Hall
(Woodside Restaurant is still closed.)
WOUNDED WARRIORS by bill evens
The eleventh day of the eleventh month is set aside to honor all U.S. Veterans. I ask that we honor our injured veterans by supporting the Wounded Warriors Project (WWP) and our drive to raise funds for their care. During the month of November, you can support WWP by placing a donation in a Special Offering envelope found in your pew and label it “WWP” or place a donation in the support bottle in the Welcome Center. Checks can be made out to "St. Andrew UMC" but mark the memo line "Wounded Warrior Project" and on the envelope. Last year we raised over $1,500.00. Let’s surpass that this year. Thank you.

Cards will be ready for pick up on Sunday, December 20th. The last day to pick up cards
will be January 3rd. All remaining cards will be recycled.
Note: Please include first and last names on the envelopes since we have several families with
