PASTOR Dear Friends: Totus Tuus Week
Finally, it is here! St. Anne and St. Patrick’s, please continue to offer prayers for the success of this program in our parishes. Pray for all the
young people who are participating in the program. Pray for the four members of the Team who are leading this program for us. The Team
will speak at all the Masses this weekend: to introduce themselves and to welcome our young parishioners to the program. Daily Mass
Monday through Friday of this week will be celebrated 11:15 am at St. Patrick’s. We encourage and invite you to come and join our young-
sters in song and prayer at these Masses and pray with them in a spirit of solidarity. Wednesday (August 2nd) is a special day set apart
for a Parish Potluck dinner during Totus Tuus. The Potluck will be 6:00 pm in the Houdek Parish Hall at St. Patrick’s. We’ve got a good
number of young parishioners from our two parishes participating in Totus Tuus. Just as we celebrate together the Eucharist, the Potluck is
an extension of that celebration where we once again join together as the One Body of Christ and enjoy company, celebration and fellow-
ship. This provides an opportunity for the parishioners to welcome, meet, show support and visit with the Totus Tuus Team. The Team also
gets a chance to meet and visit with parishioners. Also, come and see and witness how excited our youngsters are about this program!
When our young people see you present, they are very encouraged and enthused. And now, for the good and food part: what do we need
from St. Anne and St. Patrick’s parishioners? Salads, Main Dishes, Side Dishes (vegetable), Desserts, etc. The parish will provide beverag-
es, etc. We continue to thank all those who have volunteered their time to help in various ways during the Totus Tuus week. Everybody and
anybody can assist in some way. Please call the parish office for more information if you would like to volunteer and we’ll let you know
where you can offer help. Praying for the success of this program is wonderful help too. Here are the four members of the Team who will
lead the program: Marie Jeppesen is from Sibley, IA and attends Northwestern College where she is studying English. Derek Probst is from
LeMars, IA and is a seminarian for the Diocese of Sioux City studying at Conception College. Briana Roberts is from San Antonio, TX and
works at Buena Vista University as a Residence Hall Coordinator. Grady Stuckman is from Ohio and attends Franciscan University studying
Theology and Philosophy. Welcome to St. Anne’s and St. Patrick’s! My Brick
A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street going a bit fast in his new Jaguar. He was
watching for kids darting out from between cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed,
no children appeared. Instead a brick smashed into the Jaguar’s side. He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to
the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and
pushed him up against a parked car shouting, “What was that all about and who are you? Just what are you doing? That’s a
new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money! Why did you do it?” The young boy was apologetic.
“Please, mister please, I’m so sorry but I didn’t know what else to do,” he pleaded. “I threw the brick because no one
would stop.” With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the boy pointed to a spot just around a parked car. “It’s
my brother,” he said, “he rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up by myself.” Now sobbing,
the boy asked the executive, “Would… would you please help me get him back in his wheelchair? He’s hurt and he’s too
heavy for me.” Moved beyond words, the executive tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly
lifted the handicapped boy back into his wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and
cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. “Thank you and may God bless you,” the grateful boy told the
stranger. Too shook up for words the man simply watched the boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalks
towards their home. It was a long slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was noticeable, but the executive never
bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: Don’t go through life so
fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention! God whispers in our soul and speaks to our hearts.
Sometimes when we don’t have the time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us! It’s our choice to listen or ignore.
Every Parish has one, some have many He is always down front near the pulpit, uninspiring, silent, unsupportive in every way – and disturbing. He is the mortal enemy of the
pastor. He never helps with the passing of the plate, exchanging the sign of peace, singing a hymn or making the responses. He robs the
pastor of his power and steals melody from the anthems. He never whispers, does not squirm, he does not look at the clock. He just sits.
He is visible and living testimony that someone does not care. He is evidence of spiritual degeneracy. He advertises better than a billboard
the indifference of people. He is where those who sit who send word from the golf course that they are present “in spirit.” He cannot be
moved. The only way to get rid of him is to fill him. He is the empty seat.
