St. Barnabas School Newsletter
April 25, 2013
Dear School Parents: Here’s to another busy week at St. Barnabas School! We enjoyed our Earth Day and Ducks in a Row assemblies, and today is the start of our Book Fair and Art Fair (see flyer below). Never a dull moment here at the busiest school on the Southside!
In order to make up our day from the power outage last Thursday, we will have classes on a previously scheduled day off, Friday, May 17. Doors open at 7:45 and dismissal will be at 11:45 am. The Mother/Son Bingo night on 5/16 will start earlier, at 7 pm and wrap up at 9 pm in order to accommodate our schedule change. This will prevent us from extending our school year and keep our last day of school Friday, June 7. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Our 8th grade class will have their Ribbon Ceremony Mass this Sunday at 10:00 am.
Our 2nd graders will rehearse on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, for their big day on Saturday, May 4 where they will receive their First Holy Communion.
Enjoy your weekend! Sincerely,
Mrs. Lenore Barnes
We Believe in You!
Sunday Gospel Reflections Read Sunday’ Gospel, John 14:23-29
Gospel Summary
In this Gospel, Jesus prepared his disciples for his return to God. Jesus promised them that the Holy Spirit would live within them and provide strength and courage. The Spirit would always be available to help them as a counselor and advocate. Through the Spirit, they would recall the words and teachings of Jesus and even come to understand these things in a way that they could not before. In addition the disciples would receive peace from the Spirit. The peace of the Spirit would be a “shalom” kind of peace which provided a special inner serenity.
Reflection for Families
This reading is especially helpful when parents have to explain death to their children. Jesus told his disciples that if they truly loved him, they would be happy that he was going to be with his Father. While the words are sometimes hard, even for us as we face a loss through death, our faith lets us know that Jesus and our loved ones are truly happy in a way we can’t fully understand. Jesus offered the Spirit to the disciples because he knew the days ahead would be hard for them. It is that same Spirit that helps us and our families when we face hard days following a death. The greatest news in this reading is that Jesus will be back for us!
Bringing the Gospel into Your Family
Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would be with us in the world until he returned for us. Take a look in your parish bulletin, local newspaper, or at school, work, or in your neighborhood and list as many examples as you can where you see the Holy Spirit at work in the world. If you notice someone on your list who needs to be reminded that the Spirit is active in their lives, call or visit them and let Jesus’ presence be seen through you.
Discussion Starters
1. This week I saw the Holy Spirit’s presence in . . . 2. One time I know the Holy Spirit was really guiding me was when . . . 3. It helps me to know that Jesus is coming back for us especially when I think about . . .

Dear Parents,
With the end of the school year fast approaching, the Family School Association would like to do something special to show our St. Barnabas teachers how much we all appreciate their dedication to our children.
As a fun , the FSA will be assembling gift baskets to raffle off to the teachers on May 7, the teacher luncheon. We need your help to make these baskets rock! We are asking for any donations you may wish to contribute. Do you have baseball or event tickets you can donate? Gift certificates for spa services or local restaurants? Gas, grocery or shopping gift cards you can spare? Any contribution that you think would be good for a gift basket would be great! We are also accepting cash donations toward the baskets any amount will be helpful, no matter how small.
All donations will remain anonymous. We thank you for your support! This will be a great way to show our appreciation to our hard-working St. Barnabas teachers. Please send all donations by May 6.
