Christ the King In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his encyclical letter Quas Primas, in response to growing nationalism and secularism around the world. He had the foresight to realize
that secularism could soon wage awful wars against the Church. During the early twentieth century, in Mexico, Russia, and in many parts of Europe, atheistic regimes threatened not just the Catholic Church and its faithful but civilization itself. Pope Pius XI’s encyclical gave Catholics hope and—while governments of men around them crumbled—the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever. Pope Pius XI said that Christ “reign[s] ‘in the hearts of men,’ both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind.” While we hope and pray that the dark times of almost a century ago remain in the past, a troubling recent Pew Forum report shows that religious intolerance is on the rise worldwide, including in the United States. Therefore, we must remain vigilant when our first American freedom protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is threatened. (Continued on page 2)

Christ the King (cont’d) Religious liberty gives us the ability not just to worship at Mass but the freedom to feed the hungry, serve the needy, and tend to the sick. During this time when we come together as a nation in thanksgiving for our many blessings, let us thank God for the gift of religious liberty and ask that it not be taken for granted.
Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty
O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome—for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us—this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. USCCB CNS Photo/Gregory A. Shemitz visit www.usccb.org/freedom for more information on how you can take action to protect religious liberty!
Assisted Suicide Referendum Stop Assisted Suicide in CA before it’s too late! Earlier this year, through a Special Session, the CA legislature passed assisted suicide, allowing doctors to prescribe overdose medication to terminally-ill patients. Join a coalition of physicians, nurses, disability-rights organizations, and people of all faiths to stand for the lives of our elderly and dying and oppose assisted suicide. On Sundays throughout the rest of the year, referendum petitions will be available for signature outside of Masses. Signers must be registered to vote and can only sign once. Why Oppose Assisted Suicide? • Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing suicide for the terminally ill, while discouraging it for the rest of the population, teaches that the lives of the ill and disabled do not matter to our society. •Will Worsen Patient Care: Patients in other states where assisted suicide has become law, people are being denied treatment prescribed by their doctors and instead offered drugs for assisted suicide. •Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Suicides skyrocket when assisted suicide is legalized. Oregon's suicide rate for non-terminal people increased 49% after assisted suicide became legal. If you have further ques ons or need assistance our point person is Vicki Evans, Archdiocesan Respect Life Director, who can be reached at 415-614-5533 or evansv@sfarch.org.
Prayer to Stop Assisted Suicide: O God, source of all life and hope, look kindly on our brothers and sisters facing the end of their lives. Fill them with the hope of your mercy and give them peace and comfort. We pray for all Californians. Inspire them to protect the lives of the elderly, the infirm and the disabled. Renew our commitment to building a community where every human life is welcomed and wanted, valued and defended -- from conception to natural death. We ask this through the intercession of Saint John Paul II. Amen.

*Parish and Community* St. Matthew Catholic Church 8 November 22, 2015
Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 26, 2015 at 9:00 A.M.
As you make plans for this year’s family celebration of Thanksgiving, we invite parishioners who will be staying in the
area to join us for a special Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9:00am on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2015. (NOTE: There will be NO 6:30am Mass, 12:05pm Mass, 5:00pm Confessions or Exposition and Benediction that day.)
As our nation enjoys this one day a year to thank God “from Whom all blessings flow,” we Catholics have the opportunity to better appreciate just what a blessing we have in the weekly and daily opportunities we enjoy for “Eucharist,” which means “thanksgiving” in the original Greek. What better way to start our national feast as Catholics, faith-filled and faithful citizens of the United States of America! Msgr. John Talesfore, Pastor
Hospitality Ministry The Parish Hospitality Committee is looking for members to join our fun group. We are responsible for planning, organizing and hosting many of our parish social functions.
