Division…What is it?

Division is the action of separating something into equal parts

Why do I need to learn about division?

Division is an important skill to have. If you know how to divide, you will know how to:

Share something equally among friends

Figure out how much each item costs

Answer division problems in class

And so much more!

How do you divide?

There is more than one way to find the answer to a division problem!

Let’s try 12 ÷ 4

12 ÷ 4Split 12 cookies evenly into 4 groups.

How many cookies are in each group?

12 ÷ 4

There are 3 cookies in each group.

12 ÷ 4 = 3

6 ÷ 2Split the 6 triangles up evenly into the 2 cups

How many triangles go in each cup?

6 ÷ 2

There are 3 triangles in each cup.

6 ÷ 2 = 3

Now YOU Try!

4 ÷ 2

Split the 4 triangles up evenly into the 2 cups

How many triangles go in each cup?

C. 3 A. 1 D. 4 B. 2

6 ÷ 3

Split the 6 triangles up evenly into the 3 cups

How many triangles go in each cup?

C. 2 A. 4 D. 6 B. 3

8 ÷ 2

Split the 8 triangles up evenly into the 2 cups

How many triangles go in each cup?

C. 3 A. 1 D. 4 B. 2

9 ÷ 3

Split the 9 triangles up evenly into the 3 cups

How many triangles go in each cup?

C. 2 A. 9 D. 6 B. 3

Division and Multiplicationare Opposites!

Did you know that the same three numbers that are used to multiply are used to divide? For example:

• 12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 4 x 3 = 12

• 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 3 x 4 = 12

The numbers 3, 4, and 12 are a

fact family

Fact Family

A fact family is a collection of related multiplication and division facts made from

the same numbers.

67 42

6 x 7 = 42 42 ÷ 7 = 6

7 x 6 = 42 42 ÷ 6 = 7

12 ÷ 4 =

x 4 = 12 12 ÷ 4 =

4 x = 12 12 ÷ = 4

Which number belongs in the yellow box?

A. 5 B. 4 C. 20 D.10

Fact Families

35 ÷ 7 = 6 x 7 = 35 35 ÷ 7 = 6

Which number belongs in the yellow box?

A. 12 B. 4 C. 24 D. 2

Oops! Try Again.

There are 3 cookies in each cup.

6 ÷ 2 = 3

Remember to split the triangles evenly between the cups

For example, 6 ÷ 2
