    IntroductionThisdocumentprovidesstandardbreakkeysequencecombinationsforthemostcommonoperatingsystems,andsometipsonhowtotroubleshootproblems.

    TheElectronicIndustriesAssociation RS232logicleveluses+3to+25voltstosignifyaSpace(Logic0)and3to25voltsforaMark(logic1).Abreaksignaliswhenthedatalineremainsinthespaceconditionforaspecifiedduration,usually100mstosecond.Allcharactersbeginwithastartbitandendwithastopbit(andalsoaparitybitortwo).Thelevelconditionofthestartandstopbitsisalwaysopposite.So,nocharactercombinationcanlooklikethebreaksignal.AbreaksignalenablesyoutoaccessaROMMonitoronCiscoIOSdeviceswhenapasswordrecoveryisnecessary.

    Theauxiliary(AUX)portisnotactiveduringthebootsequenceofarouter.Therefore,itisnouseifyousendabreakthroughtheAUXport.Youneedtohaveconnectiontotheconsoleport,andhavethesesettings:

    Noflowcontrol

    SomeversionsofWindowsNThavehyperterminalsoftwarethatcannotsendthecorrectbreakkeysignal.Refertohttp://www.hilgraeve.com/hyperterminal.html formoreinformationandforanupgradeofthehyperterminalsoftware.

    Insomecases,thebreaksequencemightnotgettransmittedproperlywhenusingaUSB/Serialconvertercable.Insuchcases,useakeyboardwithadifferentconnectorport(forexample,aPS/2).

    HowtoSimulateaBreakKeySequenceBreakkeysequencesimulationisusefulifyourterminalemulatordoesnotsupportthebreakkey,orifabugdoesnotallowyourterminalemulatortosendthecorrectsignal.

    Note:ThehyperterminalunderWindowsNThadthisbehaviorinthepast.

    Completethesestepstosimulateabreakkeysequence:

    1. Connecttotherouterwiththeseterminalsettings:

    1200baudrate

    Noparity

    8databits

    1stopbit

    Noflowcontrol

    Younolongerseeanyoutputonyourscreen,andthisisnormal.

    2. Powercycle(switchoffandthenon)therouterandpresstheSPACEBARfor1015secondsinordertogenerateasignalsimilartothebreaksequence.

    3. Disconnectyourterminal,andreconnectwitha9600baudrate.YouentertheROMMonitormode.

    Ifallthesemethodsfailtoproperlysendabreak,retrytheproceduresfromadifferentterminalorPCplatform.
