What an exciting time as once again our Indiana Eastern Star begins a new year of love, service and devotion to the principles of our Order. I am humbled and truly blessed to be serving as Worthy Grand Matron with Brother Robert DeRolf as Worthy Grand Patron and his beautiful wife Melody. It is with much prayer and anticipation that we look to see how all of the prayerful planning will be fulfilled. Congratulations to Sister Diana Surfus, Jr. PGM, and Brother Les Simonton, Jr. PGP, and their many workers for a wonderful Grand Chapter Session. While I know it is just a short time to catch your breath, I sincerely hope that you will be able to get some well-deserved rest and we will see you out and about again in this new venture of your journey. Did you see the gorgeous tree outside the entry at Installation? The Tree of Life is one of my favorite emblems as its meaning is so broad and yet so close to my heart. It represents the Family, both bloodline and fraternal, that means more to us than words can express. Its roots remind us to be firmly planted in God’s teaching, its trunk to remain strong in faith, and its limbs a reminder to stretch out in love and service to

others. As we look to the year ahead, I am excited at the prospects and possibilities. Brother Bob and I are focusing on building a LEGACY of HOPE through service. The tree outside our Grand Chapter room door had twenty-one bunches of leaves represented by twenty-one plaques. On each plaque is inscribed the name of YOUR district. As you learn of and contribute time and money to our charitable projects, the sum total will be recorded. At the Grand Chapter Session in 2020, this tree will again be displayed. All twenty-one plaques will be inscribed with the total amount of charitable contributions and the name of a service dog sponsored during the year by YOUR district. (Be watching for information for how to participate and what the “Adopt A Dog” project is all about!) We will be honored to host Sister Marianne Shenefelt, MWGM, and Brother Henry S. Martin, MWGP, to the 2020 Indiana Grand Chapter Session. Won’t they be impressed with the abundance of love for our fellow man shown by Indiana! And think how many people will learn of our Eastern Star! Maybe, with our hard work and service, there is hope of growing membership and a ray of hope in a dimming world. Sisters and Brothers, watch the Star-Lite, listen to the letters of our State Chairpersons and lend a hand where you can. In it is the satisfaction of good works, hope for the future, and glory to our Heavenly Father. “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of Christ Jesus. Growing our Legacy, Jenny

Greetings, Congratulations to Diana and Les for a good year and a great Grand Chapter session. Being at a new venue took a lot of planning and some changes, but all the Chairmen and their committees worked long and hard to make Grand Chapter come together. Thanks to each one of you! Thank you to all the Installing Officers for a great Installation. You
are special folks and are very dedicated to our Order. Thanks to District 15 and District 11 in all your work to make the Installation a memory. I am looking forward to serving the State as your WGP along with Sister Jennifer as your WGM. I do not take these duties lightly and I appreciate all the advice and support given by our Past Grands. I appreciate all the friendships and courtesies extended by the Sisters and Brothers as we have traveled the past four years. A special thank you to my own District 11 for all their love and support and for all the hours you worked to raise funds for this journey. A special thank you to Sister Mary Hutson for chairing my Steering Committee. Thank you to District 15 and Center Chapter for always making Melody and me feel welcome. As this is our second District, we will be seeing more of you as time passes. We have put together a wonderful Grand Family with five beautiful Star Point daughters who will represent our Order with beauty and dignity. Thanks to each officer and Deputy for being part of our Legacy of Hope Grand Family. We know that you will serve the Order well. We can all make the Order stronger by working together. If there is a problem in your District, please let your Deputy know so she can pass it along to us and together we will try to find a solution. Once again, thank you for electing me as your Worthy Grand Patron. I am honored and humbled to serve. Robert E. De Rolf, WGP

This year, Worthy Grand Matron Jennifer Nicholson has chosen to combine the WGM Project for the Masonic Home and the Heart Fund into one committee called the Tree of Life. Sister Jenny is using the tree of life as one of her emblems this year as it celebrates Joy.
The Heart Fund is especially important to our Worthy Grand Matron as it honors her father Brother Leonard “Bud” Woods. We will continue to raise funds to support heart related research and programs as well as raising funds to purchase much needed AED units for the common areas at the Masonic Home.
To raise funds, we will do a variety of projects.
• Charms Members can give a donation and receive a living tree charm for their Membership Pin.
• Have a Heart – Lend a Helping Hand: For a donation, members can trace the outline of their hand on sturdy colored paper. They may choose to write their name, the names of loved ones, or a word of encouragement on their hand. The hands will be cut out by the committee and will become the leaves for a tree of life at Grand Chapter (see picture above).
• Dancing with the Stars We will support a dinner-dance with contests, games, and silent auction as well as great food and dancing. You won’t want to miss this fun event so save the date of Saturday April 18, 2020.
Most importantly, we will spread the word about preventing heart disease in our local communities. Our work will truly have the ability to give the gift of life!

On May 18, 2019, friends, family, Eastern Star members, and many Past Grand Matrons met at the Franklin Masonic Lodge in Franklin to honor Jonny Beeler who is retiring as the Grand Secretary for the state of Indiana in June. It was also the celebration of the 75th birthday for Jonny. In honor of the two celebrations (birthday and retirement) there were two cakes for the occasion. Jonny greeted all her family, friends,

and Eastern Star members for a photo moment in front of a beautiful blue background with her children Susie, Stacey, and James. After having been sick for so long recently, Jonny was lively and looked good for her special day. Beulah Jones, Grand Secretary Emeritus, who celebrated her 100th birthday recently, was not able to attend. Everyone
visited remembering all
the good times with these two GRAND ladies.

On a very busy night in May, Franklin Chapter held a ceremony to present the twenty-five year pin to Robert Heuchan. Anna Burton, WM, presided and read the ceremony as Paula Heuchan, his wife, pinned him. There was a large crowd of wellwishers present to support Bob. Several officers shared their memories of that night twenty-five years ago. The Worthy Matron in 1994 had to initiate a new member just an hour after her mother had passed away. Sandra and Barbara Heath, Worthy Matron and Adah, had received word at 6:30 P.M. that their mother had just passed away. They came and performed the offices of Worthy Matron and Adah because of the difficulty of finding anyone that late to substitute for them. Following the business of this meeting all the officers and guests went to the dining room for refreshments and fellowship.

Royal Center Chapter #375 hosted the last inspection in D#18 on April 24, 2019. It was also the Honor Night for our District Deputy, Cynthia Biggs. The night began with WGM Diana Surfus presenting the Baby Dedication for Lennon Jude Emerson Morgan, grandson of Jim & Martha Brown, PGM. That was followed by a 50 Year Award ceremony for Doris Gingerich. Doris is a Past Deputy and traveled from Ohio for the presentation. She told of her many years of service and adventures in Eastern Star. After that WGM Diana presented Jim Brown (at right) with a Grand Representative appointment of Maine. After the usual opening and introductions, the chapter honored Cynthia Biggs, DD#18. Becky & Tina Mullens presented an old fashioned revival for entertainment and led everyone in singing several songs. Everyone had a good time. Refreshments were served in the dining room followed with fellowship by everyone in attendance.

We in District #11 were privileged to have a 50-year member at our last inspection. Harold Dickason was pinned by his sister Bert Lamson. He spoke and reminded us that we all have memory troubles sometimes. He had raised 3 Master Masons saying that the first time he did it from memory, the second time he had the ritual there unopened with him, and the third time he had to read the whole thing. But he still did the work and the Mason was raised and joined the order. Harold is a special man and we are lucky to have him as one of our own.

Sister Helen Ausenbaugh of Evansville Chapter #555 received her 50-year pin with several family and friends in attendance. Sister Helen was initiated on her grandfather's Masonic affiliation and two years later her parents, Jean and Harold Grace, joined the Order. Brother Bill Shoulders, PGP, presented Sister Helen with her 50-year pin.

With the completion of the Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at the Masonic Home at Compass Park, the time had come to relocate the Snoezelen Room to the new facility. Southport Chapter will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary very soon and has been quite busy lately. We are proud to share a couple of these events with you! On April 13th several from the Chapter, along with friends, traveled from Indianapolis to Seymour in order that a 75-year Award might be presented to Sister Jean Wheatley. As Sister Jean is physically unable to travel to the Chapter, we met in the home of Jean’s daughter, Sherrye Ruddick, and were also greeted by her Granddaughter, Jennifer Thompson and Great-Granddaughter, Winnie Thompson. Sister Jean was presented a beautiful corsage from her chapter, a gift of a golden rose pin from the Worthy Grand Matron, Sister Diana Surfus, and gifts from other members of her Chapter who were present. Following greetings and hugs the ceremony was given by LeVon Holmes, PGM, and Jean’s 75-year Award was pinned by her Deputy Sister, Loretta Riehl, PGM.
When the ceremony was completed refreshing punch and delicious cake were served by Mary Birdwell, Past Matron of

Southport. Needless to report, many, many happy memories were shared throughout the afternoon. Others attending were Rovena Harrison, Widow of Beryl Harrison, PGP; Alex Birdwell, husband of Mary, and Marilyn Bohrer, Secretary of Southport Chapter. At our regular stated meeting on May 1st, Southport members were blessed with another very special occasion. Following a delicious pitch-in dinner, everyone gathered in the Chapter room to partake in a rare event. Led by Past Grand Matron LeVon Holmes, a 75-year pin was presented to Sister Janet Keith, a 50-year pin was awarded to Sister Connie Milligan, and a 25-year pin was given to Sister Diana Brown. Each of these lovely ladies was presented at the Altar by Brother John Rose, PP. It was an emotional evening as each of the ladies expressed themselves regarding their memories of the years of membership in the Order. A side note: Our 75-year recipient, Sister Janet, was in attendance in 2015-16 in the home of her niece, Janet Brown, when her sister, the late Mildred Orme, was presented her 75-year award by Sister Tina Vredenburgh, PGM, and Brother Larry Frost, PGP.
In February the members of Lakeville Masonic Lodge and Lakeville Chapter in District 20 held a Chili Dinner benefit for the Lakeville Fire Department. A fireman's boot was placed at the door to collect a free will offering and over $1,300 was raised to benefit the local fire department and their charities. Several of the firemen turned out to help along with Miss Flame of St. Joseph County. The little bit of chili that was left at the end was then donated to the local homeless shelter where it was much appreciated.
