State Geological Laboratory, Hazaribagh
Introduction-
The government of Bihar, Department of Mines and Geology established a Geological
Laboratory in Patna in the year 1965. Later this Laboratory has been shifted to Hazaribagh in 1967.
The State Geological Laboratory is one and only laboratory which functions under the Directorate
of Geology, Department of Mines & Geology. It carries out Chemical, Petrological and Geo-
chemical analysis of rocks, minerals, ores and ground water.
OBJECTIVE
The Laboratory was initially established with an objective to ascertain the quality and
grade of rocks, minerals, ores, gems and water to assist in the exploration work of the Directorate
of Geology and also in the assessment of rate of royalty for the Directorate of Mines.
Now the state Geological Laboratory is working on a wider objective and providing
facilities to private entrepreneurs, industrial units & lessees on payment basis in the interest of
systematic and scientific industrial growth of the State.
What we do (1) Carry out Chemical petro logical study of rocks for identification of minerals
(2) Analysis of quality and grade of primary minerals such as iron ores, copper, lime stone etc.
(3) Analysis of Coal & Graphite.
(4) Generation of fundamental experimental data in the field of geo-scientific investigation.
(5) Analysis of gem stones.
(6) Analysis of water samples for determining quality of water.
(7) Study of Granite & building blocks.
(8) Analysis of various geo-engineering components

DEVELOPMENT WORK
In the 2000- 2005 Year Construction was taken up regarding renovation & modernization of laboratory
building. After creation of Jharkhand state. It was decided that due to enormous
availability of potential deposits of minerals in Jharkhand. I.C.P. instrument was purchased
for the determination of trace value in minerals.
2005- 2010 1. Renovation of Lab. Building, Campus. 2. Construction of Conference Hall & Lab. Rooms. 3. Up gradation of Coal & Graphite Cell according to Coal Controller of india with
instrument T.G.A. Isoperibol Bomb Calorimeter etc. 4. Upgradation of Water Analysis Section with instrument like UV.VIS. Spectrophotometer,
Flame Photometer water analysis kit. 5. Upgradation of Petrological Section for analysis of Rock, mineral with Polarisisng
Microscope. 6. Up gradtion of Geo-Chemical Section with working table, Fume Hood etc. 7. Purchasing of Ultrapure Water System and Microwave Digester for digestion of complex
geological material.
2010- 2015 PLAN For the purpose to analyse various components related Coal, as laid down by Coal Controller of India, Following instruments are proposed to be purchase and install to facilitate the analysis of Coal on the basis of establish guide lines.
