• In response to the housing cost differential, in‐commuting to S.B. County grew dramatically from 2000 to 2010, by more than 25% in the case of commuting from Ventura County.

• If past trends continue, the majority of housing development  will continue in North County, and attract workers from the more costly South Coast housing market.

• Most commuters drive alone to work, contributing to congestion during peak commute times.

• Transit commute trips increased from North County jurisdictions to jobs on the South Coast (Clean Air Express)  as well as between Ventura and South Santa Barbara County.

• The commute distance from Santa Maria to the South Coast is: 65 miles and  takes 75 minutes650 hours annually, equivalent to 16.2 weeks of vacation

• Public transit mode increased from 4,360 to 7,559 commuters/day or from 2.4 to 3.8 percent of the total mode share.

• Bike mode increased from 4,855 to 6,830 or from 2.6 to 3.4 percent of the total mode share.

• Walking mode increased 7,200 to 8,742 or from 3.8 to 4.3 percent of total mode share.

• Public transit, bike and walk mode trips combined increased by 6,716 from 16,415 to 23,131 or 40.9 percent.
