SUBJECT: New provider type, a board-certified music therapist, is now available for client training services in several HCS programs. Rate Range of $27.00-31.00 established for this provider type

PURPOSE: To inform staff that a new provider type, a board-certified (MT-BC) music therapist, has been added to the list of qualified providers for the following programs/services, and a rate range established:

Client Training service offered through COPES, Residential Support Waiver, and Roads to Community Living;

Training and Education services available under MAC and TSOA. Rate Range: $27-31.00 per 15 minutes of service

Educational materials related to board certified music therapists and the work they do can be found below in the “Attachment” section of this MB.

A webinar was presented on March 20, 2019 from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. A copy of the presentation, DSHS Client Training Music Therapy, is included in the Attachment section of this MB.

BACKGROUND: Per the American Music Therapy Association, Inc., “Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.”

WHAT’S NEW, Effective January 1, 2019 the COPES and Residential Support Waiver were

CHANGED, OR CLARIFIED:

approved by CMS for an additional 5 years. Both waivers added a new provider type under the service of Client Training, a board certified music therapist.

MAC and TSOA programs will also offer this new provider type under the service category of Training and Education.

Case managers have the option to authorize a board-certified music therapist for Client Training services (COPES, Residential Support Waiver, and Roads to Community Living) and Training & Education services (MAC and TSOA) when the provider has an active Client Training contract.

The contract, 1045XP Community Transition and Training, has been updated to include a board-certified music therapist as a qualified provider type.

A rate range of $27-31.00 has been established for this provider type. This rate range includes the following:

An additional 45 minutes outside of the active session to document assessment/session results towards the therapeutic goal, and

Commute time, car maintenance, and gas costs

ACTION: Contract staff may begin contracting with board-certified music therapists effective immediately, negotiating a rate within the approved range of $27-31.00 per 15 minutes. Social services staff should become familiar with this provider type as a new option for clients under Client Training or Training & Education services. To authorize this service, use ProviderOne service code H2014, UD (Client Training, non-medical).
