STOCKTON MTI..ITARY AIRFIELD

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

SITE NAME: Stockton Military Airfield, also known as Stockton Field, Stockton Air Force

Station, Stockton Airfield, Stockton Army Airfield, and is currently known primarily as

Stockton Metropolitan Airport.

LOCATION: San Joaquin County, 4 miles southwest of Stockton, California (see map M-3).

SITE mSTORY: Stockton Military Airfield was acquired by lease from the City of Stockton

on 21 July 1941 and used as an advanced training center for the U.S. Army Air Corps. Manyimprovements were added including: concrete runways, housing, shops, a medical center, gas

mask instruction chamber, and ordnance storage facilities. In 1946 a majority of the site wasdeclared surplus by the Army and returned to the City of Stockton and County of San Joaquin. In

1948 the Army returned the rest of Stockton Field, with the exception of Sharpe General Depot,

to the city and county. Sharpe General Depot provided maintenance, repair, and supplies for

aircraft assigned to the,Sixth Army and operated until it was vacated in 1973, thus ending any

DOD presence at Stockton Field. A separate INPR for Sharpe General Depot (J09CA094800)

was done in 1991.

The last of all former DOD structures were demolished in 1985. Currently the majority of landthat comprised the Stockton Military Airfield is now occupied by the Stockton Metropolitan

Airport. The site of the ordnance magazine is a Regional Sports Complex, and the remaining

SITE VISIT: D ue to im pending construction of a sports com plex, of w hich portions w ere to be

m aterial rem ained. O n A ugust 15-16, 1984 a team from CEHND , led by R obert D . D em psey,

co nd ucted a site su rvey o f the fu tu re spo rts com plex site located at the form er S to ckton M ilitary

A irfield. N o exp lo sive ord nan ce m aterials w ere disco vered , bu t it w as recomm end ed that an

E xp lo sive O rdn an ce D ispo sal (E OD ) team sho uld b e called in to sw eep the area.

FINDINGS OF FACT

1. Stockton Military Airfield, composed of 1397 acres, was acquired by lease from the City of

Stockton on 21 July 1941 and used as an advanced training center for the Army Air Corps until

1946. Many improvements were added including: runways, housing, shops, a medical center,

gas instruction chamber, and ordnance storage facilities.

2. On 20 October 1946, approximately 1100 acres were declared surplus by the Army and

transferred to the War Assets Administration and subsequently returned to the City of Stockton

and County of San Joaquin.

3. On 23 December 1948, the Army returned the rest of Stockton Field to the city and county,

with the exception of Sharpe General Depot that consisted of 138.58 fee acres and 2.90 easement

acres for a total acreage of 141.48. Sharpe General Depot provided maintenance, repair, and

supplies for aircraft assigned to the Sixth Army.

4. Sharpe General Depot was vacated in 1973, ending any DOD presence at Stockton Field.
