Leading-edge and cost-effective
3
Anybody wanting to be successful in the marine passenger or cargo business
must be able to rely on the operational availability of their vessels – at all times.
In increasingly tough competitive environments, every hour counts. This is the
reason that the permanent availability of all of the onboard drive units has a
decisive role to play. Efficient energy management and optimized transport
capacities are also just as indispensable for cost-effective transport operations.
Competence that is convincing
All of the marine drive equipment from Siemens is fit for maritime duty – it
is extremely reliable, efficient and space-saving. This is complemented by the
fact that it is virtually maintenance-free and very user friendly. We are one
of the world’s largest and most experienced suppliers of drive technology for
ships and we provide innovative products and solutions for the complete
low-voltage and medium-voltage range. From motors and frequency converters
through converter transformers and generators up to switchgear, communi-
cation interfaces and open-loop and closed-loop control software. Our quality
products are available individually or can be integrated to create a customized
system.
Perfect interaction
When it comes to the reliability of a complete drive system, then not only
does the quality of the individual products count. Maximum availability is also
achieved as all of our components interact perfectly with one another. This
is the reason that already in the development phase we optimally match our
motors and frequency converters in our own system test facilities. This
increases the efficiency of the overall system and at the same time reduces
the operating costs.
Harmonized drive systems for all applications
Siemens has harmonized, matched system packages for all onboard drive
applications – and that for every type of ship. For instance, we can offer
the widest range of main drives, such as propeller drives for fast patrol boats
and submarines, thrust drives for self-propelled drilling platforms, booster
drives to support the ship’s diesel engine for cargo vessels or POD gondola
drives for ferries, tankers and cruise liners. Our portfolio also includes special
applications, for example, explosion-protected motors, drives for suction
and discharge pumps on dredgers, drives for bow thrusters, pumps and fans
as well as drive units for onboard compressors and various winches.
Innovation as a matter of principle
Excellent technology can always be improved further. This
is the reason that we continually develop our drive systems
– for example, by making them even more compact. The
size of our equipment is just one example. We have been
able to reduce the overall envelope dimensions of many of
our machinery series – but the power was kept the same.
Or by using space-saving IGBT power semiconductors in
our drives. We have the most compact and quietest low-
voltage drive converter in the world that has been specifically
designed for pumps, fans and compressors – on request,
also water-cooled and with degree of protection IP54.
Fit for a life at sea
Continuous vibration, heavy pitching and rolling motion
under rough sea conditions and aggressive salt-laden envi-
ronments in the machinery room – drive systems on ocean-
going vessels are subject to exceptionally tough operating
conditions. This is the reason that Siemens has developed
rugged drive solutions that are based on standard equipment.
These drives can stand up to the toughest of environmental
and ambient conditions. Special bearings and windings,
special paint finishes and additional winding insulation
protect our motors, transformers and generators from all
damaging external effects. Perfect, disturbance-free operation
is guaranteed using reinforced electrical cabinets, vibration-
proof power electronics as well as anti-condensation heating
for our frequency converters that is provided as standard.
4
Ready across the board
All of the cost-saving potential must be fully utilized where high competitive pressure
requires precise business plans. And it is precisely the ship’s technology that should
operate as efficiently as possible. This is the reason that drive solutions are demanded
which increase the performance and at the same time reduce the costs – solutions
such as those using Siemens Marine Equipment.
5
Certified on request
As a result of supplementary marine-specific qualifications
our drive systems are in full compliance with the regula-
tions of all of the common ships Classification Societies.
This means that our drive systems can be supplied with
the following certificates:
• Det Norske Veritas (DNV)
• Lloyd’s Register (LR)
• Germanischer Lloyd (GL)
• Bureau Veritas (BV)
• American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
• Chinese Class Society (CCS)
Other ships Classification Societies
are possible on request.
Standard or special drives depending on the requirement
We develop ship-specific drive concepts for drive applica-
tions on the high seas. These concepts are based on our
standard products and drives that have been specifically
designed for marine applications. These are complemented
by completely newly developed drive solutions – for
instance our Siemens-Schottel Propulsor (SSP) and our
booster motors.
6
With high cost-saving potential:
Drives for suction-discharge pumps on dredgers
When it comes to land reclamation using dredgers, pumps
equipped with flexible drive systems are the best solution.
This is the reason why Siemens offers you variable-speed
pump applications which permit processes to be precisely
controlled. When compared to conventional technology,
this means that up to 50 % of the energy can be saved.
And not only this, the stress on the complete mechanical
drive train is reduced. Pump ratings can be as high as
several megawatts, which is why we recommend a
medium-voltage drive system as it permits especially
cost-effective operation.
Higher application flexibility: Winch drives
Winches are increasingly being equipped with three-
phase drive systems. These are more rugged and
require less maintenance than the usual hydraulic and
DC motors which are still common today. This is the
reason that these offer greater versatility in the appli-
cation. For instance, to quickly and automatically
execute position changes, their frequency converters
are equipped with control software that is specifically
tailored to the particular application. Speed and torque
are determined, depending on the particular require-
ment, via a master control system. Holding brakes and
the ratio between the braking torque and speed can
also be controlled in this fashion. The winch drive
system is directly connected to the local operator
interface, the higher-level automation system and the
emergency monitoring system through fast communi-
cation interfaces.
Reduce costs, increase profitabilityApplications and solutions
At sea, cost-effectiveness depends on different factors than for applications on
terra firma. This is the reason why we focus on making our drive systems even
more reliable, more compact and more efficient. Whether for standard products
equipped for shipboard applications or for special drives that combine electronics
from Siemens with intelligent technology to make them ideal for marine applications.
7
Optimum operating characteristics:
Main diesel-electric drives
Main electric drive systems rightly have the image of
being especially cost-effective, environmentally
friendly and reliable. They are admirably suited for
marine applications thanks to their excellent control,
maneuvering and positioning characteristics. They also
take up a minimum amount of space, are quiet and
have low vibration levels. Siemens generator sets not
only cover the ship’s demand but also the power require-
ments of the propeller drives – no matter whether these
involve low-voltage or medium-voltage drive systems.
However, users have even more advantages – the
installed drive power of azimuth thrusters can be flexibly
handled using variable-speed motors. This is the reason
that diesel generators can be continually operated at
the same speed and therefore are extremely energy-
saving. These drive systems are also extremely operator-
friendly – the integrated interface in the drive converter
handles the complete monitoring of the drive system
including the circuit-breaker, transformer and premag-
netizing unit. Operating personnel can separately
access all of these units so that it is easy to commission,
troubleshoot and service/maintain the system.
Can also handle even the most sophisticated of
tasks: Cargo pumps
When it comes to loading and discharging, e. g. oil or
chemical tankers, cargo pumps must handle some very
complex tasks. A continuous harmonization process is
required as a result of the quickly changing consistencies
and a flow rate which must be precisely regulated. In
this case, electric drive systems provide the best results.
Simply put, because they can quickly and precisely
respond to changing operating conditions. But also due
to their good overall efficiency, their low noise and low
pollutant emission as well as the straightforward
installation and maintenance.
Siemens can offer you a complete solution – optimally
harmonized low-voltage drive systems including the
control. This means that you can benefit from all of the
advantages of this technology without any restrictions.
By the way, we can also supply low- and medium-voltage
motors for hydraulic pumps therefore ensuring that
your complete marine system is even more compact.
Special marine drives
8
Standard marine drive systems are suitable for almost all of the typical marine
applications: From the pumps through the winches up to the main drive.
However, some special applications require dedicated solutions in order to
really achieve an optimum when it comes to energy efficiency, reliability and
transport capacity. We have a range of newly developed marine motors, which
have been newly developed from ground up for precisely these applications.
The multi-talent:
The Siemens-Schottel Propulsor (SSP)
The SSP is a POD (podded drive) – also known as gondola
drive – using permanent magnet motors. It is mounted
under the ship’s stern and can be moved as required around
its vertical axis. It is the ship’s main propulsion drive and
active control rudder at the same time: A dual function
which decisively improves the maneuverability of a ship.
It also reduces the fuel consumption with respect to
conventional diesel motors by approx. 11%. These drives
are mounted outside the ship so that they save space on
board and their power losses are directly dissipated to the
sea water. Every ship profits from an SSP – reliable, low-
maintenance with minimum noise and vibration.

High power, but compact: Booster motors
Booster drives increase, in a wide variety of ways, the main
machine power of large container ships. They support the
ship’s diesel engine when accelarating, relieve it over the
complete speed range, guarantee consistently high speeds
and improve its efficiency. The electric motor, additionally
installed on the shaft, also increases the drive power.
The booster ensures that the ship to reach its final speed
significantly faster – and in normal operation – has a lower
fuel consumption and lower maintenance costs.
Performance that moves youforward – standard marine-specificproducts
10
Reliable drives are important for every ship. The highest priority –
technical reliability and performance – for you and therefore for us.
Rugged, high-performance: Generators
When it comes to brushless synchronous generators from
Siemens, you have the choice: It doesn’t make any differ-
ence whether low- or medium-voltage synchronous
generators, with between 4 and 10 poles or in the power
range from 125 kW to 7 MW – our standard versions are
available in a wide range of configurations. In fact, for
customer-specific designs, we can even go up to power
ratings of 20 MW and more without any problem. The
voltage controllers are always included in our scope of
supply – sometimes they are even already integrated in
the generators for example, in the lower power ratings.
Our generators have an especially rugged design which
means that they are ideally suited for handling thermal
overload conditions. They are well equipped for life on
the high seas: Optimized windings and frame elements,
an offshore paint finish which is resistant to salt water,
special bearing designs which are resistant to vibration
and movement as well as anti-condensation heating and
temperature sensors for windings and bearings which
are included as standard. In the ”Marine Equipment”
version, our generators are in conformance with all of
the usual ship and offshore certificates.
11
Safe, compact, efficient:
Drive converter transformers
Siemens drive converter transformers are available in a
wide range of power ratings from 50 kW up to 25 MW.
The voltage classes range from 380 V to 11 kV.
They have a wide range of sea-going features. Our Geafol
cast-resin transformers are manufactured using a self-
extinguishing epoxy resin quartz mixture. This makes it
very difficult for them to catch fire which means that the
danger of transformer fires is basically eliminated. No
poisonous gases and vapors are emitted even when arcing
occurs. Not only this, but they are also easy to install and
generally take up less space than comparable conventional
transformers. For you this means more volume for cargo
and in turn, a higher efficiency.
This is because drive converter transformers with lower
no-load and short-circuit losses increase the efficiency,
therefore reducing the operating costs.
All of our transformers have optimized windings, which
mean that they are less prone to faults. These windings
are also mutually decoupled from one another and from
the iron core to dampen vibration. This makes them
insensitive to shock and vibration and they are as quiet
as oil-filled transformers. The foil winding principle also
ensures high AC and surge voltage strength. A special
protective paint finish, mechanical reinforcements to
suppress vibration and temperature sensors, which are
integrated in the windings, complement the extensive
range of features for duty on the high seas.
12
Reliable even under the most difficult conditions:
Motors
Siemens Marine Equipment motors combine the already
known advantages of Siemens motors with special features
that make them suitable for marine applications. Motors
above 1 kW have gray cast iron frames that can stand-up
to high stress levels, are resistant to vibration and also
dampen noise. Further, a special offshore paint system
provides a high degree of protection against corrosion in
aggressive, salty environments, extreme temperatures and
permanent moisture. Special bearing designs – e. g. high-
quality, no-play, pre-loaded, deep-groove ball bearings
or paired angular-contact ball bearings – make the motor
insensitive to vibration often encountered in marine
applications.
Especially for use on ships
Siemens Marine Equipment offers low-voltage motors
from 0.06 to 4,700 kW. For high-voltage motors, the range
even extends from 200 kW up to an incredible 50 MW. In
addition to the standard IP55 degree of protection, air-
and water-cooled motors are optionally available with
degree of protection IP56. Siemens can also offer water-
cooled low-voltage motors. Contrary to air-cooled systems,
these types of motors hardly dissipate any heat to their
environment so that they do not unnecessarily heat up
machinery rooms. These types of motors also have the
added advantage that noise levels are even lower.
13
Minimized size, maximum power: Drive converters
Siemens drive converters are also specially equipped for
marine applications. They are mechanically reinforced
and a rugged cooling system design means that heavy
rolling and pitching motion of a ship has no adverse
effects. The high standard degree of protection prevents
the ingress of water, the cabinet is tropics-proof even if
water drops in at an angle. Water-cooled drive converters
are available for tough ambient conditions. Low-voltage
drive converters for drive systems are available with
power ratings that extend from 75 kW up to 4 MW. For
pumps and fans, we can offer drive converters that are
especially quiet and compact. When compared to con-
ventional equipment they have a 30 % smaller footprint.
The degree of protection of all of the drive converters
can be increased up to IP54 without any significant
associated costs. The Active Front End (AFE) version is
available as an additional option. These self-commutated
rectifier-regenerative feedback units permit 4-quadrant
operation – not only this, sinusoidal currents with almost
no harmonics are fed back into the supply. The standard
power ratings of medium-voltage drive converters start
at about 800 kW and extend into the two-digit Megawatt
range. The innovative SIMOVERT MV is a medium-voltage
drive converter up to 7.5 MW. It is the first drive converter
of its class that is equipped with HV-IGBT power semicon-
ductors. It has some excellent features thanks to its
especially simple and modular design. SIMOVERT MV is
not only the most compact drive converter in the medium-
voltage range. It also has the maximum availability
thanks to its combination of high reliability and service-
friendliness. Large drive converters from 5 to 25 MW are
used for the main ship’s drives.
