35 minutes Pass out handprint mats. Go over expectations with the mat and the rekenrek. Allow students several moments for exploration time.

How can we use the rekenrek to solve addition and subtraction equations?

Solve several equations of each type. Stress vocabulary and explanations of how the problems were solved. Use the large demo one to show students’ thinking.

Use equation cards for meaning of the equals sign.
