SustainabilityisimportanttoRAIAmsterdam.Asanambitiouscompany,wehavebeenworkingoncreatingan
environmentallyfriendlyenvironmentforsuccessfulmeetingssince2008.By2017weaimtobeoneofthefrontrunnersinthe
fieldofsustainabilityintheconferenceandeventindustryinEurope.
Inthepastyearwehavetakenmoremajorstepstowardsrealisingourgoal,includingstartingtherenovationofourclimatecontrol
system.Meanwhile,ourrecentlycompletedAmtriumbuildingisthefirstBreeamExcellent-certifiedexhibitionandconferencebuildingin
Europe.

elaboratelongtermCSRstrategywasformulated.AstrategythathelpsliftCSRwithinourorganisationtonewheights.Within
thenewCSRstrategywelookedathowtoorganiseourselvestobecomefuture-proofandhowtoeffectivelycontributeto

Retainingaclearfocusonfirst-classeventsandourknowledgeofmarketsandtargetgroups,RAIAmsterdamhasexhibitiontitlesinfive
sectorsinwhichitisaglobalmarketleader.Thesesectors(andexhibitiontitles,respectively)are:professionalcleaning
(ISSA/INTERCLEAN),remanufacturing(ReMaTec),traffictechnology(Intertraffic),themaritimesector(METSTRADE),andwater
technology(Aquatech).ThevariousinternationalexhibitionsandconferencesorganisedbythirdpartiesinRAIAmsterdamConvention
Centre,aswellasthespin-offexhibitionsorganisedbyRAIExhibitionsinChina,Mexico,TurkeyandtheUS,alsocontributetoour

Physicalandvirtualmeetings
Inadditiontophysicalmeetingsatevents,RAIAmsterdamalsofacilitatesvirtualencountersbeyondtheeventitself.Thisenhancesthe
reachofexhibitionsandconventionsandallowsthecontinuationofcontactsbetweentargetgroupsandcommunitiesoutsideofevent
dates.
Stimulatingcityandsociety
RAIAmsterdamstimulatestheeconomyinthecityandregion.Hotels,restaurants,museums,transportcompanies,suppliersandthe
airportbenefitfromthelargenumberofexhibitorsandvisitorswhovisitthecityduetothe(ofteninternational)exhibitions,conferences
andevents.TheeconomicvalueofRAIAmsterdamtotheAmsterdammetropolitanregionwasreassessedinlate2014,showinga

furtherincreaseoverrecentyears.RAIAmsterdamwasfoundtogenerateatotalturnoverintheAmsterdamregionofover600million
eurosaswellas7,000jobsonafulltimebasis.
CorporateSocialResponsibility(CSR)isanintegralpartofthepolicyofRAIAmsterdam.OurCSRapproachhasreceivedinternational
recognitionwiththemostprestigioussustainabilitycertificates.Theprogressmadeinthe15CSRpolicyareasisreportedannuallyina
separatesustainabilityreport.
Shareholders
RAIAmsterdamhastwoshareholders:theRAIAssociationandtheCityofAmsterdam.
Themajorityshareholder(75%)inRAIAmsterdamistheRAIAssociation,thetradeassociationformanufacturers,importersand
wholesalersofmobility-relatedproductssuchascars,trucks,bicyclesandtrailers.Theassociationhas500members.
TheinvolvementoftheassociationwithRAIAmsterdamhasalonghistoryasthebicycleindustrystartedorganisinganannualtrade
exhibitioninAmsterdamin1893.ThenameRAI,whichstands(inDutch)for‘bicycleandautomotiveindustry’,wasdevelopedseveral
yearslaterwhentheautomotivesectorjoined.
TheremainingsharesareownedbytheCityofAmsterdam(25%),theparticipationofwhichdatesbackto1956andhasaneconomic
background.
Personnel
RAIAmsterdamemploysaround400people(around375FTEs).Approximatelyhalfofthesehaveacommercialposition,40%an
operationalroleand10%areinmanagement.Tempworkersarealsodeployedforspecificevents.TheRAIhasafixedpoolofaround
300regularflexibleworkersandemployssome3,000tempsayear.

bytheMaasaipeople,thiscampaignaimstoimproveaccesstocleanwaterandreducewater,sanitationandhygiene-relateddiseases.
Theprojectwillhelpgive50,000peopleaccesstosafewaterandaround16,500tosanitationfacilities.

decibels(dB(A)).Themodelestimatesinadvancethedisruptionthatwillbeexperiencedbytheneighbourhoodduringaneventinthe
RAIandpredictswhetheranoiseexemptionpermitneedstoberequested.Thisensuresthatpreventivemeasurescanbetakenon
time.
Thenoisemapwasusedregularlyin2014,witheighteventsbeingtestedforsoundlevelsinadvance.Foureventsrequirednoise
exemptionpermits.TheothereventswerefoundtocomplywiththeRAI’senvironmentalpermitfornoisedisruptionwithoutneedingan
exemptionandcausednodisruptioninthevicinityoftheRAI.
PreventingParkingIssues
In2014wereceivedgreenlightfortheconstructionofanewmultifunctionalparkinggaragefor900vehicles.Thenewgaragewill

Municipalheatinginsteadofnaturalgas
WehavereconnectedtoNuonmunicipalheating,whichresultedingasconsumptionbeingreducedby17percentin2014.Weconsider
municipalheatingtobearenewableenergysource.Theurbannetworkusestheresidualheatfromthegenerationofenergyinlarge
powerplants.In2014municipalheatingenabledustocutbackourCO2emissionsby1,500tonnes,whichisequivalenttotheyieldof
around15,000solarpanels.
Attheendof2015,ayearsoonerthanplanned,wewillupgradetoa12MWhconnection.Thisshouldresultina95percentreduction
ingasconsumption.Italsoofferssignificantsavingsingasconsumptioninthefuture,bringingusclosertothezeromark.
Theswitchtomunicipalheatingresultedinsignificantlylessnaturalgasconsumption.Themovetoelectriccoolingandtheinstallationof
speeddoorsalsoreducedconsumptionin2014,asdidthemildwinter.

Openhalldoorsresultinanunnecessarylossofheatand/orcold.Moreover,majortemperaturefluctuationsanddraftsare
uncomfortableforexhibitorsandvisitorsalike.WiththisinmindtheRAIinstalledspeeddoorswhichensurethatheatstaysinand
temperaturesremainstable.Sevenadditionalspeeddoorswereaddedin2014.
SwitchtoElectricCooling
TocooltheRAIcomplexweareswitchinginstagesfromgasabsorptionmachinestoelectriccooling.Thismethodnolongerrequires
theuseofnaturalgasandmakesthecoolingprocessatleasteighttimesmoreefficient.In2014weinstalledthefirstcoolingmachineof
4.5MWh.Bytheendof2015atotalof9.7MWhincoolingcapacitywillbeinplace.Thiswillresultinaconsiderablereductioningas
consumptionandasmallerCO footprint,whileonlyrequiringaminimalincreasein(green)electricity.2

Toensurewearecoolingtherightareasinthecomplex,weinstalledawaterloopsystem(distributionnetwork).Previously
decentralised,wecannowusethecoolingnetworktoextractcoolingimmediatelywhereitisneeded.
Findingsolutionstogetherwithclients
Therearequickgainstobehadinadjustingthestartingtemperatureinthemorningsinspringandautumn.Intheseperiods,westart
heatingthehallsduringthenightinordertogettheareastothedesiredinitialtemperaturebymorning.Coolingstartsintheafternoonto
compensatefortherisingtemperaturescausedbythepeopleandequipmentinthehalls.Organisersoftenagreetoreducethestarting
temperaturebyonedegree,whichrepresentssavingsforthemandhaslessimpactontheenvironment.In2016wewillbestartingthe
firsttestsduringourownevents.

Weperformedauditsforfoursuppliers,dividedintothreesessions:initial,centralandfinal.Thenewhospitalitysupplier(basedonthe

WehavefoundthatmanyofourTop20suppliersfindithardtoanswerourquestionsaboutsustainability.Itisespeciallydifficultand
sometimesevenimpossibleforsmallersuppliersinthechaintomeetourrequirements.

Duetothewidevarietyofproductsandservicespurchasedwedecidedtodeterminewhichsustainableprocurementcriteriashouldbe
applied.Wewilldescribethreetofourcriteriathatapplytothefullrangeofprocurementandwhichmustbeinlinewithourpositionin
thechain(i.e.,whatwecaninfluence).Wewillalsoenterintoadialoguewiththesuppliers.Thedefinitionswillbefinalisedin2015.
Suppliersthatcannotimmediatelymeetthesecriteriawill,whereverpossible,besupportedinafollow-upstage.Sofar,wehave

OurkitchenhasmadethedeliberatechoicetouseingredientswithaddedvaluefortheGreaterAmsterdamregion,aregional
cateringconceptwecall‘HeartwarmingAmsterdam’.Theinitiativewasdevelopedseveralyearsagowhenourkitchenstaff
visitedlocalproducerstoseehowtheproducts(frommeattovegetables)werebeingproduced.Thisresultedinapassionfor
traditionalproductsfromthemetropolitanregionandthekitchencurrentlyusesvarioushigh-quality,pureingredientsto
preparefullysustainablemeals.
Thechoiceswithintheconceptvarybuttheproductsalwayshavetoofferaddedvalueforsocietyortheregion.Thiswayweareableto
supportsmall-scaleproducersinthemetropolitanareaanduselesscommonproductsfromtheregionandseason.
CateringontheExhibitionFloor
Ourstakeholdersattachgreatimportancetosustainablecatering.Increasingthesustainabilityofthecateringontheexhibitionfloorand
inthehallswillthereforebeafocalpointinthecomingperiod.Tothegeneralpublicitisthecateringintheselocationsthatismost
