This project seeks to improve sustainability in the agri-food
sector in Sri Lanka through improving access to information
raises awareness on sustainability issues at a national level:
SCP can play an important role to change currentunsustainable practices in Sri Lanka’s agriculture and foodsector. Agriculture in Sri Lanka, utilizing 43% of the total landarea of the country, is one of the key environmental concerns;having a tremendous impact on various issues, from climatechange to soil deterioration. The lack of awareness onsustainable produce among consumers, the lack of standards,limited certification systems at affordable prices and the lackof third party verification have so far hindered the switch toenvironmentally sustainable and healthy practices in theagriculture sector.
Progress towards environmentally sustainable agri-foodsystems in Sri Lanka requires improving the methods forquantitative, integrated assessment, and promoting the useof these methods in different domains. But the shortage ofdata has restricted Sri Lanka in its analysis of a number offood-related challenges and to advance the currently availableapproaches and methods. The project aims to tackle this bydeveloping a methodological framework to improvesustainability in the agri-food sector of Sri Lanka throughimproving access to information.

1. Established steering committee and held regular meetings
2. Held a training of trainers on LCI database development (with support from the Life Cycle Initiative)
3. Installed a national LCI database for agri-food products and gathered data on the three sectors (rice processing, tea and dairy subsectors)
