SWIFT™ Rooftop Wind Energy System
As part of its mission to provide accessible renewable technologies and reduce fuel
poverty, Renewable Devices Swift Turbines has designed and manufactured the world’s
first silent, rooftop-mountable wind turbine, capable of providing a cost-effective
renewable energy source for domestic, community and industrial use. The SWIFT™ can
be grid-connected for embedded power generation, installed with battery bank for off-
grid stand-alone applications or linked to an immersion water heating system. Theemphasis of the design process has focused on safety, reliability and ease of operation,
alongside the high-performance of this innovative system. Unique technologies have
been developed, leading to the filing of five international patents, which allow the
SWIFT™ Rooftop Wind Energy System to offer:
Universal application
Silent, vibration-free rooftop operation
Simple installation
Safe, efficient & autonomous operation without maintenance
Visually appealing design which is planning compliant
Environmentally sustainable “harm neutral” design
Sophisticated maximum power point tracking electronic controlsystem
The SWIFT™ turbine is mounted on a bespoke aluminium mast with a minimum blade-
roof clearance of approximately 0.5 metres. It is usually optimally mounted at thehighest point of a roof in a position which benefits from prevailing wind, but will
work effectively in almost any location. The SWIFT™ is designed to be aesthetically
pleasing and is planning legislation compliant.
To ensure minimal transmission of oscillations
from turbine to building, the SWIFT™ turbine
mounting brackets incorporate damping
systems designed to absorb a wide range of
frequencies. The patented ring diffuser
minimises turbine noise by preventing the
creation of turbulent vortices at the blade tip.
In addition the five bladed design allows for a
slower speed of rotation to further reduce
noise, making the SWIFT™ Rooftop Wind
Energy System the quietest wind system
currently available.

The SWIFT™ has a unique over-power regulation mechanism to control rotation speedand maintain system integrity and safety in high winds. This consists of a patentedtwin-vane progressive mechanical furling mechanism coupled with a sophisticatedelectronic control system, the world’s first to utilise maximum power point tracking(MPPT). The optimum amount of power can be taken from the turbine under all windand loading conditions - without stalling, representing a step change in the accurateand safe control of small wind turbines. The controller also contains a fail-safe system, allowing the turbine to safely retain structural integrity in extreme weatherconditions.
Benefits
The benefits of generating your own clean energy are both financial and
environmental. The SWIFT ™ Rooftop Wind Energy System is designed to be simply
and easily connected to your local electricity grid, so that the energy you generate is
offset directly against your electricity consumption - thus directly saving you money. In addition the SWIFT™ is eligible for grants to reduce the initial cost of installation and
the sale of ROC’s or ‘Renewables Obligation Certificates’ will bring in further revenue.
Overall it can be expected that the SWIFT™ will generate up to 4,000kWh per year
(dependant upon the wind resource at a particular site) providing a net financial
benefit of up to £440 per year.
In environmental terms, each unit of electricity generated from a SWIFT™ Rooftop
Wind Energy System displaces one unit generated from fossil fuels, with the added
benefit that the electricity is consumed on-site, thus negating losses from
transmission. This amounts to a displacement of approximately 1.6 tonnes of CO2
per
year – a significant environmental contribution.
Development Status
The development phase of the SWIFT™ is
now complete. Extensive testing has
been carried out on both prototype and
pre-production units to ensure the
systems safe and efficient operation.
Manufacture has commenced of
production models and these are
currently being installed in diverse
locations across the UK. The SWIFT™
Rooftop Wind Energy System will be in

Both the turbine and electronic control
system have been designed using cutting-
edge computer analysis and design
technology.
The SWIFT ™ Rooftop Wind Energy System is
the first rooftop-mountable wind turbinesystem in the UK to be officially accredited
for grant funding by the Energy Saving
Trust.
