Last year, Kym spent 217 days in hospital with a breathing infection, despite being well enough to attend day programs in the community during that time.
Due to health concerns, it was recommended that Kym move into a nursing home.
At thirty-four years of age, Kym was devastated at the prospect.
“She was so upset,” says Kym’s Mum Penny. “There’d be no appropriate activities and she’d be mixing with people in a completely different demographic.”
That was when Kym’s parents learnt about a potential place at Sylvanvale’s Hinkler site. Hinkler utilises universal design features that ensure it feels
like a home, despite being able to provide many of the high tech medical solutions that would be found in a hospital.
Over the next few months, Sylvanvale worked with Penny and Kym’s Dad, Lee, to secure the right room for Kym.
On 31 October 2018, Kym moved into Hinkler. It was a day of great excitement and joy for Kym and her family. The icing on the cake was when they saw that Kym’s good friend from school, Emma, also lives at Hinkler.
“The biggest surprise for Kym, which boosted her and actually boosted us, was when she saw that her friend Emma lives at Hinkler. We’ve known Emma since she was little. The girls had gone to school together.”
Sylvanvale provides supported independent living to people of all levels of needs. Our services have helped keep young people out of nursing homes, as was recently the case of Kym.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME
Since then, the family have built a strong bond with the Hinkler staff.
"The staff talk and listen to Kym, they understand her diabetes and what her food preparation involves. They have learnt Kym’s unique communication style, and support her to navigate the community,” says Penny.
“It’s been a long journey to get her to Sylvanvale, but we’ve finally succeeded. We’re very happy there,” agrees Lee.
THE STAFF AT HINKLER ARE AN AMAZING,
AMAZING LOT. THEY REALLY ARE.
I WONDER WHERE THEY’VE BEEN
ALL THESE YEARS.

Ever since Jesse was a child, he longed for a three-wheeler bike of his own.
“On the very first day Jesse moved in here, his Mum told us how much he wanted a tricycle,” says Sylvanvale Site Manager Carolyn.
To help him achieve his goal, Jesse and his family engaged Sylvanvale Support Coordinator Katrina. She then worked with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to obtain funding.
“The three-wheeler was a valid goal,” says Carolyn. “Jesse uses a walker or a wheelchair. The tricycle would enable him to keep his muscles strong and access the community.”
Thanks to the endorsement of NDIA, Jesse’s funding was approved.
Support Coordinator Katrina then connected with TAD Freedom Wheels, an organisation that builds bikes for people living with disability who can't ride standard bikes. She also sourced an Occupational Therapist (OT) to ensure the bike would be correctly fitted.
Meanwhile, Jesse’s supported accommodation team regularly took him to his OT appointments and received training on how to support Jesse to use his bike safely.
On 14 March 2019, when he was out for lunch, Jesse’s bike arrived. Jesse arrived home soon after.
At Sylvanvale, our team of highly skilled employees works together alongside the people we support and other organisations to help participants reach their goals. It was through this collaboration that Jesse recently achieved his dream of owning a three-wheeler bike.

“He was so excited to see his bike for the first time,” says Carolyn. “He literally whooped with delight when he saw it.”
Now, Jesse regularly uses his bike in the community and even at home. On weekends he loves going for bike rides at local parks with his Mum.
“It’s more than a trike,” says Carolyn. “It gets Jesse into the community and keeps his muscles strong. Jesse’s new bike makes him happy, healthy and connected, and he feels very blessed to have it.”
WORKING TOGETHER IN PARTNERSHIP,
THE TEAM HAS SUPPORTED JESSE TO
BE HAPPY, HEALTHY AND PART OF
THE COMMUNITY.
