To Do Well, Students Have To Be Well.
Fingers carrying a flu virus can contaminate up to 7 clean surfaces
HOTSPOTS
HITTING THE
Germ shedding starts up to three days before someone feels sick, putting others at risk without even knowing it
Water fountain handles are among the top five “germiest” touch points in a school setting
Studies show that only 58% of female and 48% of male middle and high school students wash their hands after using the bathroom
Highest bacteria counts per square inch are found on surfaces commonly used by teachers
Viruses can live from 24 to 48 hours on surfaces
Door handles are one of the most touched surfaces in schools, and a key point of germ transmission
The average desk has 400 times more bacteria on it than the average toilet seat
Fingers carrying a flu virus can contaminate up to seven clean surfaces
Schools have their own unique “hot spots” that typically harbor the most germs. The Healthy Schools Project* educates and encourages students to
Wash, Wipe and Sanitize to help reduce the risk of transmission – especially in germ hot spots.
Symptoms are bad and so are the side effects: Student performance suffers. Student absences are linked to lower achievement and higher school dropout rates. Even when ill students are physically present, they often perform poorly.
Parents’ work is affected. In the U.S., caring for a sick child results in 126 million lost workdays and $14.5 billion in lost productivity annually.
Budgets are affected, too. Schools spend over $2 billion on substitute teacher pay each year. Studies show that teacher absenteeism also affects student achievement.
About 25% of Americans go to school or college every day. Unfortunately, their germs go right along with them. Colds and flu are a major problem for educational facilities, with the common cold resulting in 189 million school days lost each year–and influenza causing nearly 38 million absences a year.
Absenteeism starts with presenteeism– coming to school sick. When ill students touch a doorknob, keyboard, desk or other surface, they leave germs that can live up to 48 hours. Other students and teachers pick up those germs, and the cycle continues.

In 1907, a Philadelphia teacher blamed a severe outbreak of colds on the fact that so many students used the same cloth towel. To protect her students from germs, this resourceful teacher cut heavy paper into squares, so each student had an individual towel.
When the Scott Paper Company/ Kimberly-Clark heard about her ingenious solution, the paper towel was born!
