10 tasks to help you succeed!!!

Recorder Lessons

1. Find a quiet spot to practice

• Try to have no distractions• Be sure to play without interruption• Close the door so as not to disturb others• Play inside the house; not outside• Communicate to your family what you need to succeed!

2. Have your materials ready to practice

3. Write your letter names under each note

• Under every note you should write it’s name• Do not write under a rest• Do write every note name under all of the ti-ti’s

Feel your steady beat first! One, two ready go! Ta’s and ti-ti’s and rests

4. Read your rhythm sounds out loud

5. Read your melody sounds out loud

• Feel your steady beat first! One, two ready go!

• Read your letter names to indicate high, low or same notes on the staff

• Read rhythm and melody at the same time

• Ti-ti’s should be read like ti-ti’s!

• Set your beat first• Audiate (hear yourself playing

music inside your head)• Place your fingers on the

correct holes while you are reading

• Rest your mouthpiece at your chin; not in your mouth yet.

6. Finger your notes while you audiate

7. Play very slowly several times.

• Be sure to play slowly and accurately at first.

• Try to avoid mistakes by going very slowly

• Listen to your music making• Begin with the beat!!!

8. Repeat problem areas 6 times.

• If it doesn’t sound right, go back and try it again until it does sound good!!!

9. Play in front of a mirror to check your technique (the proper way to play).

• Left hand on top• Left fingers covering holes• Right fingers above holes • Elbows out at 45 degrees• Start each sound with “too”

10. Give a concert for someone you know and have fun playing your music for them!

• If someone else plays an instrument, you could do a duet or even make a band of instruments!

• Have fun!!!

You will make some mistakes!That is part of learning to do anything well.Be proud of what you can do and show it!!!
