Nature reserves are an old idea for natureconservation. They’ve been successful atprotecting land, habitats and the wildlife with-in them. But we have a new vision for thefuture. It will use nature reserves as it foun-dation but will involve landscape scale con-servation. We want wildlife to move acrossthe landscape by joining up all these naturereserves. If a rare species is trapped withinthe boundaries of a nature reserve it isn’tgoing to survive

We’d like to see a living landscape of inter-connected land which wildlife can use tomove across the landscape. We’d like moreland to be managed for wildlife. In the UpperTawe Valley we have five nature reserves.Have you got land that you could manage forwildlife? By increasing the land managed ina more wildlife friendly way we hope to seewildlife move across the landscape, colonis-ing new areas and increasing its range.

The nature reserves include Allt Rhongyr,which we bought to protect the rare, wild-flower rich, unimproved limestone grassland.It is home to a large number of rare anddeclining plants. Look out for cowslips and inspring. At Ystradfawr, we manage the landto protect the rare, wet tussocky grasslandknown as rhos pasture. Coal mining oncedominated this industrial landscape. Overtime rhos pasture and wet woodland haveformed. It is a fantastic example of hownature has reclaimed this land. The rhospasture is now home to the rare marsh fritil-lary butterfly, whilst green and great spottedwoodpeckers frequent the woodland.

Upper Tawe Valley

We are working to restore, recreate andreconnect wildlife rich spaces in the UpperTawe Valley. We want to see wildlife thriveand re-colonise a healthy and resilient ‘Liv-ing Landscape’ so future generations canencounter, experience and enjoy our naturalheritage.

The project, funded by £186,000 fromWREN’s Biodiversity Action Fund, will bringtogether the management of the nature re-serves in the Upper Tawe Valley to form aLiving Landscape to safeguard wildlife popu-lations and enable them to adapt to climatechange.
