Technological AdvancementsAsset Monitoring & Surveillance

Who am I?• Father of four

• Guitarist, Camper, Hiker, Martial Arts Instructor

• 30 years experience in Upstream and Midstream Petroleum in construction, operations and production

• 10 years with TC Energy accountable for the management of risk associated with external threat modes

• Includes program accountability for Monitoring and Surveillance of events having potential to increase negative interaction with the Pipeline Asset including:

• Societal (population, development, land use change)

• Environmental (geotechnical, erosion)

• NOT TECH SAVY

One of North America’s largest natural gas pipeline networks

• Operates 92,600 km (57,500 mi.) of pipeline

• Transports ~25 per cent of continental demand

• Over 650 Bcf of gas storage capacity

Premier liquids pipeline system

• 4,900 (3,000 mi.) of pipeline

• Keystone System transports ~20 per cent of Western Canadian exports

• Safely delivered more than 2 billion barrels of Canadian oil to U.S. markets

One of the largest private sector power generators in Canada

• 10 power plants, 6,000 MW

• Low-emissions portfolio includes nuclear and natural gas generation

TC Energy (TXS/NYSE: TRP)

Regulatory Changes

“…We must never become comfortable and complacent, believing that our systems for oversight are working, without ongoing testing and challenging of our approaches and the underlying assumptions we make about them. We simply cannot take our role in assuring pipeline safety and operating performance for granted. And I dare say, neither should any of you.”

Peter Watson Chair of National energy Board; February 2015

• Federally Regulated Operators are adapting to changes in Regulatory Framework

• Evolution from prescriptive regulation to Management System Based and continual improvement models

• Onus on Operator to demonstrate data based decision making to validate our program strategies.

• Access to timely, accurate comprehensive data to support informed, defendable and auditable decision making

• Data gaps results in conservative approaches equaling operational and resource implications

• Mechanical Damage is one of the leading threats to the integrity of pipeline systems

• Accountable for 509,00 damages in 2018 (CGA DIRT)

• 23% of significant pipeline incidents (PHMSA 2000-2019)

• Billions in Societal and Infrastructure Cost

Industry Significance

Mechanical Damage is Time Independent and persistent threat throughout life cycle of pipeline. Detection is a primarily reactive process and currently not predictive….looking for leading indicators

• Fleet of 3 caravan 208 fixed wing, 3 Bell 206, 3 A350 A-star internal aircraft. Reliance on outside vendors for Alberta assets

• System Patrolled at different frequencies dependent on conditional and regulatory factors

• Currently patrolling 1000,000+ kms of pipeline annually• 10,000 observations annually• Resource heavy validation and verification• Reliant on human detection capabilities and assessment. Requires low

altitude, slow travel• Con: Subject to Human Error and limiting for Data Analytics• Pro: instantaneous intervention

Monitoring & Surveillance

Patrols primarily visual; subject to limitations on human eye detection and memory retention
