2015 TELLURIDE ARTS ANNUAL REPORT

Telluride Arts provides strategic, coordinated leadership to advance the Telluride Arts District.

Our unique mission is to promote a culture of the arts comprised of numerous institutions, events and artists, that weave film, music, theatre, dance, literature, poetry, visual arts, architecture, design, and culinary arts into the fabric of our community.

With the Telluride Cultural Master Plan as our guide, we provide programs that advance the arts as a whole, and leverage the arts to forward community priorities.

TELLURIDE CULTURAL MASTER PLAN

The 2012 Telluride Cultural Master Plan identified key priorities for sustaining the arts community, and called out Telluride Arts to provide the leadership needed to ensure implementation of the plan.

Since that time Telluride Arts has established the Telluride Arts District and become one of the first Certified Creative Districts in the state, developed branding and marketing for the Arts District, more than doubled our budget, strengthened numerous diverse partnerships, led planning for Wayfinding and Space for the Arts, contracted to restore the Telluride Transfer Warehouse for community space, and streamlined existing programs to best forward Master Plan objectives.

The Telluride Arts District contains a remarkable concentration of arts and cultural activity that engages artists from around the region and across the globe.

The Telluride Arts District logo and identity was rolled out over the course of 2015 through a coordinated campaign that includes web, print, social media, radio, and events.

The Telluride Arts District Website was launched in December 2014, and is a hub for all of the arts in Telluride with a comprehensive arts calendar, and directories of all arts events, institutions, venues, galleries, resources for artists and more.

OPEN ART RADIO

Open Art Radio is a 1 hour, monthly radio show on KOTO that coincides with Telluride Art Walk.

Hosted by Kate Jones, our director, the show highlights Art Walk openings and upcoming coming art events in short interviews with our artists, galleries, and producers.

Over 120 on-air interviews were conducted in 2015.

ART + ARCHITECTURE WEEKEND

Telluride Art + Architecture is designed to promote the vast creative talent in the Telluride Arts District.

2015 Art + Architecture hosted 305 Participants

10 different venues throughout Telluride were featured, including 6 local homes, a Tiny Home Village,the Pinhead Institute, the American Academy of Bookbinding, and MiXX Gallery.

Over 30 artists, chefs, architects, designers, and musicians were involved with the event, competing for a $3,000 prize awarded at the weekend’s close.

Additionally, the event was sponsored by 19 different new supporters from the building and design industries.

ART + ARCHITECTURE WEEKEND

ART WALK

Telluride Art Walk is a festive celebration for art lovers, the community and friends.

In 2015, 22 venues participated in Art Walk, including 18 fine art galleries. More than 400 people come through a single gallery on a typical Art Walk night.

ARTIST STUDIOSThe Stronghouse provides essential workspace for artists and musicians, and features a darkroom, a music studio, a screen printing lab, and private studios. 25 artists use the studios on a daily basis.

STUDIOS FOR STUDENTSTelluride Arts offers free space to a student artist in exchange for volunteer hours. Our current student artist has been a committed studio member and dedicated working artist for three years.

MENTORINGTelluride Arts and One to One Mentoring work to provide local youth with art mentorships by pairing students with arts professionals. In 2015, 5 students were mentored by Stronghouse artists.

HOLIDAY ARTS BAZAAR

The Annual Arts Bazaar hosted by Telluride Arts was moved to the Telluride Elks Lodge and took place from December 4-6, in 2015.

The festive event began Friday night with a Grand Opening and Merrymaking Celebration, featuring warm holiday spirits and live music on the stage.

Twenty-five vendors sold handmade goods ranging from coffee, to greetings cards, to leather goods, jewelry, and more.

Sales grossed over $30,000 and over 325 items were sold.

SMALL GRANTS

Small Grants support the innovation, creativity, and professional development of individual artists living in the Telluride region. The program, established in 1999, is funded by the Town of Telluride and administered by Telluride Arts.

Telluride Arts received a record number of Small Grant applications for 2015; thirty-five.

Nine artists were awarded a total sum of $10,000.

The 2015 recipients were: Colin Sullivan, Dalen Stevens, David Byars, Drew Ludwig, Emily Palmquist, Lane Smith, Marissa Mattys, Michael Wyszynski, and Scott Harris.

Telluride Arts produced 34 art exhibits in 2015

GALLERY 81435A contemporary fine art gallery that features 10 solo exhibits annually.

STRONGHOUSE GALLERYIn a historic warehouse, the Stronghouse lends itself to more experimental work, and features 10 solo and group exhibits annually.

WILKINSON LIBRARYWe curate twelve exhibits in 4 different exhibit spaces in the Library for artists of all levels.

OFF-SITE EXHIBITSIn 2015, we curated 2 new off-site exhibits.

TELLURIDE TRANSFER WAREHOUSE

Telluride Arts is under contract to acquire the historic Transfer Warehouse, which is proposed to be the community benefit provided with the commercial development being planned on the SW corner of Pacific and Fir Streets.

Preliminary plans have been created with the help of ArtSpace, and include large, beautiful, flexible spaces for events of all sizes, a dedicated gallery space that can be used for small gatherings, a small cafe/bar, and the offices for Telluride Arts.

ARTSPACE PLANNING

We hired ArtSpace to develop a Sustainable Facilities Analysis for the Transfer Warehouse.

They hosted several community conversations to identify the existing needs for space, and then determine the best and highest possible use for the building based on those results.

Additionally, they held a number of targeted focus groups with town staff, elected officials, user groups, and artists.

They have presented four space and use recommendations with operating scenarios.

The Telluride Arts Umbrella Program has been incubating local arts events and projects for forty years. The program provides both administrative support and fiscal sponsorship for arts start-ups.

WAYFINDING PLANNING

The Telluride Arts District led the development of a wayfinding plan. The primary goal is to provide better information in the way of street signs and kiosks, that will make it easier for locals and visitors to navigate town.

The improvements include:• Cleaning up the streetscapes• Improving signage for key destinations• Marking the Telluride Arts District and the Telluride Historic District• Improving signage for parking and special events • Creating 3 kiosks with event information

We work strategically with the community at large and state and national partners to implement strategies to advance the arts at the local level.

OUR PRIMARY PARTNERS:

TOWN OF TELLURIDEWe work closely with the Town to forward common goals that will create community and economic vitality through the arts.LOCAL ARTS SECTORWe engage the local non-profit and for-profit art sector for ongoing planning that informs our work.COLORADO CREATIVE INDUSTRIESAs a Colorado Certified Creative District, we stay connected to CCI to advance best practices in community arts development.

We engage the community, strengthen partnerships, build consensus and set our goals through planning.

With the Telluride Cultural Master Plan as our guide, we hone our short term goals through three-year planning. Our current three-year workplan, 2013-2016, was developed in collaboration with the community through facilitated focus groups on our three main program areas.

We are on track to meet or exceed goals outlined in our current work plan, and will develop a new work plan in the second half of 2016.

In addition, we recently have developed a Sustainable Facilities Analysis and a Telluride Wayfinding Plan in partnership with our community.
