THAAKAT ANNUAL REPORT 2015
8/19/2019 Thaakat Foundation Annual Report 2015
3/29
Every year, our project sites are faced with challengesthat leave us with the ability to fall or to make impact. Dueto our location and proximity to circumstances we havethe opportunity to make a difference especially when it’sneeded most. This year, Karachi, Pakistan—a city of 20million people faced a treacherous heatwave. The wave
of temperatures (recorded up to 113F) hit at a time whenmost people were observing the religious month of Ra-madan- this included the fasting from sun up to sundown.Shops were closed; restaurants were shuttered, for thepoor man walking the streets in search of water—it wasnowhere to be found.
The people who suffered the most were those withoutadequate housing and resources. At our DREAMS schoolsite in Jam Chakro village (Kachra Kundi), Karachi,Pakistan, the burning garbage and searing sun overhead
created for the most difficult of circumstances.Immediately you helped us to arrange food rations andpledged funds to build a water well. Today, should a heatwave hit, our villagers have a source of fresh flowingwater, new trees sprouting to give them shade and thepromise that we are there to support them.
Our Fatmata Maternity center in Sierra Leone serves as asounding board for six communities. Malaria is a problemand villagers don’t need to tell us, we see it.
Our project sites continue to serve as a ray of hope.
This year we launched a cross community Malariaprevention program and have encouraged thedistrict to adopt increased measures to detect andprevent people from the disease. Today we havesanitation leads in place at each village post, fines inplace for who don’t observe safety and hygiene rules
and plans to build out public latrines (restrooms) tostop the spread of illness and disease. This is leadership.
At the Konadu Basic School in Ghana we wanted tobe more than an institution, we wanted to be a partof building solutions for the community. More than 50%of students come from single mother homes and we
felt it our responsibility to help empower them. Thanksto your donations, we were able to launch a mushroo
farm. Not only does this flourishing farm provide skill
and opportunity for women who will be able to rotatethrough our training program but the profits will alsohelp us sustain growing operations at our school. Our
first mushrooms went to market in September 2015 athey looked enchanting! These mushrooms are not jus
food- they are going to one day define Konadu as aregional agri-hub.
The $125,000 you helped us to raise this year wasstretched as far as possible to provide the most impa
Every dollar has created a smile, love and opportunity for those who really need it.
Thank you for believing in us.Sincerely,2015-2016 National Thaakat Foundation Board

Konadu Basic SchoolIn 2013 we adopted the c ommunity of Tanoboase,Ghana. Here is where we found Righteous, or rather wefound each other.
Righteous began his school with just two kids. Now hehas over 100. Righteous and the children make the bestwith what they have. Class starts at seven with breakfastand a morning prayer. Righteous and his staff teach thestudents to read and write English, learn basic math andgeography, and provide a safe space for the children toplay while their parents work. And all of this at no costfor the parents and students of the school.
Over the last year, our donors, our partners Liz Zweiflerand Austin Pruett and everyone supporting us havebrought this school to a place we never imagined insuch short time. We have a complete 3 room school-house, the uniforms, supplies and books to meet thestandards of the Ghana Educational Service, childrenreceive lunch every day, we have employed 8 teachers, and currently have 111 students enrolled.

Antenatal Care (2015):
Providing antenatal care to the pregnant wpopulation has been one of Thaakat Founmain initiatives to aid in reduction of maternchild mortality rates. From January throughNovember of 2015, a total of 489 women w
continually provided with antenatal care. Aly, through outreach, 46 additional womenprovided antenatal care. Antenatal care hetrack and monitor the health of both the mothe child, throughout the pregnancy.
Adult Population (2015):
Malaria had the highest disease incidenceamong the adult population in 2015 with500 cases out of 1514 total disease casesrecorded in the adult population (0.200
incidence rate). STIs ranked in second high-est with a 133 cases recorded (0.088incidence rate). And ARI/Pneumonia rankedin third with a 116 reported cases with anincidence rate of 0.077.
Healthy Baby Deliveries (2015):
We had a total of 93 healthy babies deliveredsafely at the Maternity Center in 2015. Of those,45 were boys and 48 baby girls were delivered.YTD we have delivered over 150 babies at thecenter.
More than 6,000 patients havebeen provided free treatment
since our opening in April 2014.
Family Planning (2015):
STDs have been one of the top threediseases afflicting the adult population of BlamaPerri. Thaakat Foundation’s initiative to reduceSTD rates within this population subset has beento: increase awareness of the health benefits ofprotected sex through increased use ofcontraceptives. In 2015, the Maternity Center hada total of 258 reported new contraceptive usersand 194 continuing users. Oral contraceptiveswere used in higher numbers by new users (147users out of total 258 users) whereas injectibleshad a higher number of continued users (119
users out of 194 total users). Thus, the conclusionis injectable contraceptives were better acceptedby the target adult population, as is visible by thecontinued use of this form of contraception over aprolonged period of time.
Children Under Five Population (2015):
Malaria ranked in number one with 562cases out of a total 2376 disease cases
reported in this population (0.237 incidencerate). ARI/Pneumonia ranked in second with410 cases (0.173 incidence rate).Malnutrition ranked third with 207 casesreported and incidence rate of 0.087.
Adolescent Population (2015):
Malaria ranked highest in the adolescentpopulation with 123 cases reported in 2015out of a total 449 cases (0.274 incidencerate). Typhoid ranked as the second highestwith 47 cases reported (incidence rate of0.105). The third highest disease in thispopulation was worm infection (incidencerate of 0.078).
Acute Malnutrition Treatment (2015):
In order to help reduce the mortality rate in children under five population, Thaakat Foprovides a nutritional food source (in powdcalled Sierra Mix. Sierra Mix is loaded with a
necessary nutrients to aid in the growth anddevelopment of a young child. AdditionallyMaternity Center does growth monitoring opopulation subset. From January through ber of 2015, a total of 888 children under fivpopulation’s growth were monitored, out o430 were boys and 458 were girls. By monthe growth of these children, disease prevewell as early diagnosis and treatment of a d
