CAPA Acknowledges
the Following Sponsors for Their Support
D ear CAPA members,
Thank you all so much for having given me the privilege to serve you and our beloved society over the past year. Being president of CAPA is a great honor I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
It was an unusual year for each of us since our society experienced a few changes that are necessary to ensure its healthy growth such as reforming CAPA (by forming CAPA-TX and merging CAPA-FL with CAPA-TX) in order to make 501c(3) application more feasible, and amending CAPA Bylaws. It was your unwavering support and trust, your passion, dedication and enthusiasm in making CAPA greater that moved CAPA forward. Incredible support came from the Committee Chairs/EC members and the
CAPA former presidents. I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. You have my deepest respect and admiration.
With our collective effort, we achieved much in the last year and accomplished nearly everything that I pledged to do in the last CAPA business meeting:
1. Amend CAPA Bylaws (Yes)
2. Continue weekly online lectures (Yes)
3. The 4th CAPA Diagnostic Pathology Course in Flushing, New York, August 2018 (Yes)
4. CAPA annual business meeting with pathology updates and group dinner during USCAP at National Harbor, Maryland, March 2019 (Yes)
5. Promote interactions with other pathology societies, both in the U.S. and China (Yes)
6. Co-organize the 4th Sino-US Cancer Diagnostic Pathology Summit (Beijing, China, July 2018) (Yes)
7. Resume CAP companion meeting (Chicago, October 20-24, 2018) (Yes)
8. Promote CAPA Subcommittees and their role in different conferences (Yes)
9. Continue CAPA awards to promote academic excellence for junior members (Yes)
10. Further update or rebuilt CAPA website (Yes)
11. Continue publish CAPA eNewsletter (Yes)
12. Internal review of CAPA finance document, followed by applying 501c(3) status and external auditing. (Yes. We successfully completed internal and external finance reviews by EC and CPA. In 9/2018, we submitted all documents for 501c(3) application to IRS and currently pending for IRS decision.)
13. Promote a healthy CAPA election on the basis of the amended Bylaws (Yes)
14. Continue fund-raising campaign (Yes. A total of $39,700)
I also would like to congratulate the 5 members Drs. Xiaoxian (Bill) Li, Haodong Xu, Huihong Xu, He Wang and Jiehao Zhou for being newly elected Board of Directors. I have full confidence in the new leadership team for their ability to further reinforcing a culture that is essential to the healthy growth and unification of our society (i.e., cohesiveness, inclusiveness, effective communication, and mutual support), and ultimately leading CAPA to a brighter future. Our members are counting on you.
I say goodbye as your president, but I (as a member) will be continuously working with you to forge ahead CAPA’s mission.
Sincerely yours,
Yun Gong, MD

CAPA Awards
CAPA Honorary Award Dr. Ruoqing Huang, is the Regional Director of Cytopathology Services at Elmhurst Hospital Center and Queens Hospital Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Clinical Associate Professor of SUNY. He received his medical degree from Fujian Medical University, M.S. degree from University of Minnesota, and Ph.D. degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. He completed his pathology residency at Cornell University and fellowship training at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Dr. Huang has been a lifetime member of CAPA since 2015 and is an active participant in the organizational activities. His contributions to the organization have been greatly appreciated, and in 2016 he was
awarded "Member of the Year". CAPA has grown rapidly from its humble beginnings, established in 2004 with just dozens of members to now a prominent Chinese American Pathologists Association consisting of hundreds of members. However, due to the organization’s rapid growth and the development of its functions, shortcomings of the organization bylaws and potential problems for long-term development became evident. In light of these problems, a Bylaws Committee was organized to amend the Bylaws with the support of the former CAPA President Ping Tang and President Yun Gong, and approved by the Executive Committee (EC). Dr. Huang was appointed as Chairman of the Bylaws Committee. Under his leadership the Bylaws Committee had set forth rules for discussing its issues and encouraging active participation and debate amongst group members. The minutes of these discussions and opinions were drawn up and voting on final decisions occurred via teleconference. Through the six-month joint effort of all members of the Bylaws committee and the support of the CAPA leadership, the revision to the Bylaws has been completed and approved by CAPA members. The successful amendment of CAPA Bylaws is a significant hallmark for our organization's long-term goals and will also lay a solid foundation for CAPA to become an IRS 501(C)(3) non-profit organization.
CAPA Distinguished Pathologist Award Dr. Youli Zu (祖幼立) completed medical school in China and
obtained PhD in Japan. Subsequently, he received pathology residency training at the New York University and hematopathology fellowship training at the National Cancer Institute of NIH. In 2004, Dr. Zu joined the Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine, Houston Methodist Hospital, Houston, TX. Currently, he is the Director of Hematopathology Section, the Endowed Chair for Hematopathology Research, and the Director of Cancer Pathology Research Lab at Houston Methodist Hospital. In addition, Dr. Zu is also the Professor appointed at the Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University, New York, NY.
As a scientist-physician, Dr. Zu is interested in translational research to immediately improve disease diagnosis and/or precision therapy. His lab has pioneered oligonucleotide aptamer technology development and potential clinical applications. Studies demonstrated the advantages and utilities of synthetic oligonucleotide aptamers for rapid circulating tumor cell detection, specific tissue immunostaining, selective tumor imaging, targeted drug delivery, cancer immunotherapy, and precision nanomedicines. His research was awarded by NIH K22, R01, R21, R33, R41, and R43 grants. In addition, Dr. Zu also received National Innovation Award at the World TechConnect Summit. Currently, he is the principal investigator on NIH R01 and CPRIT research grants. Dr. Zu has published over 120 papers and book chapters in both clinical and biomedical research fields. He has also given over 50 scientific presentations nationally and internationally.
During the past years, Dr. Zu has been actively involved in CAPA activities and played roles in Executive Committees, Election Committee, and CAPA Symposiums. Currently, he is the chair of CAPA Election Committee.
