2ough he moved to New York almost a decade ago, former Atlantan Chris Verene’s photography continues to exert a

powerful sway in the city and has been one of Atlanta’s enduring success stories of a local boy made good. From Oct. 9-Nov. 4 he’llreturn to Marcia Wood Gallery in Castleberry Hill to exhibit his

work and sign copies, on Oct. 9, 6pm of his latest monograph fromTwin Palms Publications, Family , which continues the artist’stwenty five-year long mission to document his extended family

living in the economically-depressed hamlet of Galesburg, Ohio.2e pictures run the gamut from hopeful to dire, but have an

empathy and heart that makes them stick in the brain.

Celluloid Couple

Husband-and-wife creatives   Whitney and Micah

Stansell have already made a mark in the city withmemorable installations at last year’s one-night-only art happening Le Flash, and exhibitions at

the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia and Whitespace Gallery. For one night only on Oct. 1,

8pm-2 am, the Stansells will screen their 15 minute

video and sound installation Between You and Me ,projected onto the Norfolk Southern Building. 2efilm is about alienation in our modern, online world.

With a cast of comely local actors, the artists exploreroles—librarian, postal worker, lover—endangered by

our newly beloved virtual reality. 2e filmic happening is sponsored by Flux ( fluxprojects.org ), a one-night only public art event that brings performance, film, dance

and sculpture to the Castleberry Hill neighborhood.

Show World

Part of ACP’s charm is how

it blankets the city with a

plethora of photo-based work

at venues from funky coffee

houses to traditional galleries.

Some of the gallery shows

 worth checking out this year

include the humorously titled

Doctors of Photography

exhibition at Jennifer Schwartz

Gallery through Oct. 9

( jenniferschwartzgallery.com)featuring three medical doctors

 who dabble in the form.

Buzz-worthy international

work is also on the menu

with a solo show of creepy-

provocative South African

artist Roger Ballen’s black and

 white work at Jackson Fine

 Art ( jacksonfineart.com), Oct.

29-Dec. 23. 2e ACA Gallery

of SCAD (scad.edu/exhibitions )

is hosting German conceptual

photographer Candida Höfer

from Sept. 10-Oct. 29 whose

 work captures the depopulated

interiors of libraries, museums

and theaters. Also worth a

look, SCAD photography

professor Steve Aishman’s

show at the Atlanta

Contemporary Art Center

(thecontemporary.org ) Oct. 9

-Dec. 12 that will delve intofour bodies of the inventive

photographer’s work including

a series on dudes he deems

OK to handle his son, the

supremely sweet and tender

Pictures of Guys I Like Holding

Bill and a deliciously tactile,

occasionally lurid series

celebrating the iconic Fifties

toy, Silly Putty Rorschach.

Snap Attack!

A splendor of visual overstimulation now in its 12th year, att cbts phtghy remains oneof Atlanta’s signature annual art events. During the month of October ( acp.org), executive director amyMi and her able cohort Mih dvi Muhy bring an eclectic blend of films, portfolio reviews, visual art exhibitions and lectures (including a talk by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s photo curator Jffrshim, ot. 22) to town.
