The Creation of the World

by God

Sunday

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

God said ‘Let there be light, and there was light.

Monday

God said ‘Let there be an expanse to separate water from water …’

God called the expanse ‘sky’.

Tuesday

God said ‘Let the dry ground appear …’

God called the dry land ‘earth’ and the mass of the waters ‘seas’, and God saw that it was good.

Wednesday

God said ‘Let the land produce

vegetation: seed bearing plants,

and fruit trees on earth, bearing fruit with their seed inside …’

and God saw that it was good.

Thursday

God said ‘Let there be lights in the expanse

of the sky to separate the day from the night …’

And it was so. God made two great lights - the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

Friday

God said ‘Let the water

teem with living

creatures,

and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky…

… let the earth produce every kind of living creature in its own

species: cattle, creeping things, and wild animals

of all kinds.’

God said ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves,

and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that creep along the ground.’

Saturday

The heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing: so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
