Woodford ("Wood y") Simmons has p layed fid d le fo r over 50 o f h is 67 ye a r s . He grew up—and s t i l l l i v e s —in M i l l Cr eek ,W. Va ., 16 m ile s sou th o f E lk in s . At age 13, he earned th e $15 he needed t o buy h is f i r s t fid d le by b u i ld in g the f i r e each morning in th e sch oolh ou se. He won h is f i r s t fid d le con t e s t in E lk in s a t th e age o f 19# and con t in u es t o win p r ize s a t co n t e s t s a l l over the s t a t e , Woody's

f i r s t ban jo was made by h is fa t h e r , and had 5 fr e t s made o f fe n c in g w ir e , a gr oundhog-h ide head, and s t r in g s made o f u n r a velled scr een w ir e .
