belched so much black smoke that it made it difficult for them to breathe.

People who lived near steel plants had to suffer.

In Chicago, there is smoke everywhere. It grows in the air and it’s so thick that people could see only one block ahead of them.

In some cities, sewage and industrial pollutants were simply released into nearby water sources without regard for the consequences.
