CAREER DAY EDITION
On April 14, 2015, Oak Ridge Heights hosted its first Career Day. Mrs.
Hahn had a huge impact on this very special event. In her other school she
created a Career Day and she wanted to carry it along to our school. It
wasn’t just Mrs. Hahn who put it together; Mrs. Voicheck, Ms. Johnson, Ms.
Purcell and Mrs. Matthews helped to create this fun day. They decorated
Room 5 and had refreshments for all of the guests. There were approximate-
ly 50 guests who came to share their careers with the school. We were very
lucky to be joined by a few very distinguished quests including Mayor
McCormac, Assemblyman Coughlin, Senator
Vitale, and Board of Education Members
Zullo, Anderson and Harris.
In this edition of the Golden Eagle
Ledger, we are highlighting some of the ca-
reers that we learned about on this great
day! They include a Nurse, Author, Florist,
Hospital Engineer, Dietician, and an
Acupuncturist.
Mr. Farawell — Florist by: Olivia Peterpaul
On April 14, 2015, Oak Ridge Heights School #21 hosted their
first annual Career Day! I interviewed a man
named Mr. Farawell. He told me that he was a
florist. What he does is pick all different types
of flowers and takes the different colors and can
make them into almost anything you can think of.
For example, he can take white and red roses and
make them into a baseball. It doesn’t just have to
be an object made out of flowers; he can also just
make pretty combinations.
Mr. Farawell shared some fun facts with
the students. He told us that there are not many blue flowers. He also
mentioned that the brown middle of a sunflower is seeds and that when
those flowers die, the seeds fall to the ground
and plant new sunflowers.
Mr. Farawell had to go to a special school for florists to learn about differ-
ent types of flowers and how to create what he makes now. He also told us that
there are many different occasions for making combinations or objects out of flow-
ers. He mentioned holidays, birthdays, weddings and funerals. He also mentioned
that Valentine’s Day is his busiest holiday!
In conclusion, I believe that all of the students and I really enjoyed learn-
ing about a new job and we all hope that our school has another Career Day so that
Mr. Farawell has another opportunity to come back!
Ms. Lasna — Nurse by: Nicole Jorge
Ms. Lasna was another guest who came to our school for
Career Day. She is a dedicated nurse who has been doing her
job for over 20 years. She went to school for 2 years to become
a nurse. Ms. Lasna first worked in the Emergency Room for quite some time, tak-
ing care of children, adults, and the elderly. When she started
working as a nurse, the hospital she worked at had attached rooms
where the nurses actually lived. However, today it is much differ-
ent because the nurses don’t live in the hospitals.
When Ms. Lasna visited each of the classrooms she always
told the students to work hard in school. She stressed that edu-
cation is important and will always help you in life. She inspired
many students by her powerful words. Ms. Lasna was truly an
amazing guest and Career Day at Oak Ridge Heights School 21 was
a huge success.
Mr. Curia — Hospital Engineer by: Olivia Peterpaul
During Career Day, I had the chance to interview many dif-
ferent people. One person I spoke with was Mr. Curia who works
in Hospital Engineering. He makes sure all hospitals are safe dur-
ing storms or any other type of day.
Mr. Curia mentioned that all hospitals NEED power. There
are so many machines that help people stay alive and those ma-
chines depend on the hospitals having power all of the time.
He also mentioned that hospital buildings, as well as most
of the things inside, need to be built using stone. Instead of using wood, Hospital
Engineers use stone to keep the hospitals fire proof. If there was ever a fire in a
hospital, there are special rooms for patients and doctors to go to keep them
safe.
In conclusion, I had an exciting time learning about Mr. Curia’s job and I
hope to learn more about it during future Career Days!
Ms. Druck — Acupuncturist by: Gianna Grasso
An acupuncturist is a person who sticks small needles into the surface of your skin to relieve ten-
sion. These needles are so slim, you can’t even see them from three feet away! The tiny needles are used
to relieve the pain of headaches, back pain, and neck pain. The needles are inserted to move energy.
Though they seem painful, they don’t hurt as much as the vaccinations we get at the doctor’s office.
During Career Day, Carly Druck came into the classrooms to teach about acupuncture. She taught
the students how to move “chi” with various exercises. Chi is “natural energy", "life force", or "energy
flow” in traditional Chinese medicine. Ms. Druck also passed out a big ear and a few diagrams that had all
of the needle contact points mapped on it. Ms. Druck has a Master’s of Science & Acupuncture. Although
she said she has lots of favorite things about her career, Ms. Druck’s
favorite thing is helping people.
Ms. Bozzo — Children’s Author by: Nicole Jorge
Linda Bozzo came to our First Annual Career Day at Oak Ridge Heights. It was very
exciting to have a real author talk about her job.
Ms. Bozzo is a children’s author who wrote over 50 titles such as: My First Horse,
Amazing Animal Tales, and Houses of the Past, Present, and Future. Ms. Bozzo chose to be-
come a children’s author as a new career. About 13 years ago, she was inspired by writing
books for her children. She used to be a dance teacher and some of her earlier books were
inspired by dance. Before she began writing books, she wrote poems and short stories. This
prepared her to write books.
Ms. Bozzo writes a lot of non-fiction books about animals but what most people don’t know
is that she just doesn’t get to pick the topics of her books. Her publisher gives her 2 or 3 titles to
pick from and then she chooses which she wants to write about. She also can take photographs for
her non-fiction books, but she doesn’t always do that. She never illustrates her own books.
Ms. Bozzo has very exciting adventures when writing her books. She doesn’t just sit at a
desk and write; she gets to explore the WORLD! When she made her book “Search and Rescue Dog
Heroes,” she got to interview a police man and his dog. She actually got to see the dog perform a
real drill in the forest.
Ms. Bozzo has a very exhilarating job. She enjoys what she does and that’s what makes her
motivated to write. We should follow that same goal as stu-
dents. Ms. Bozzo taught us all to be determined and to enjoy
what you do. She was an amazing guest to come to our school
and really made Career Day exciting.
Mrs. Grasso — Dietician by: Gianna Grasso
A dietitian is a food and nutrition expert. A dietitian works at vari-
ous places such as hospitals, doctor’s offices, grocery stores, gyms, nursing
homes, or a private practice. Mrs. Teresa Grasso works at a hospital. At
the hospital, she does 1 on 1 counseling, cares for people who have high cholesterol; are overweight; under-
weight; or have diabetes, and outside the hospital, she does health fairs and nutrition talks. Some of the edu-
cation she does is based on the USDA’s MyPlate method.
Her education consists of a Bachelor’s degree in Science and after that Teresa had a yearlong intern-
ship at UMDNJ. She also took an exam that was mandatory to pass in order to become a registered dietitian.
Mrs. Grasso’s favorite part of her job is that she likes to educate and help people. However, the most
challenging part of her job is that people don’t always listen to her advice.
