The population of Moordown during the Great War was a small fraction of what it is today. There are 118 names on this Roll of Honour. Some surnames appear more than once. That represents a tragedy for more than a 100 families in what was, at that time, a relatively small community. Like so many other towns and villages across the country, the losses from that dreadful conflict were devastating. There would have been virtually no one who remained untouched by the loss in each community.

The names on this plaque are listed here alphabetically, and chronologically. You will also see that some names are added after the official end of the war. The Great War left a terrible legacy for so many families. Men continued to suffer – and some die, as a result of their war injuries – for years afterwards.It is difficult for our generation to imagine the suffering of that time.

In addition, there is a second plaque in the church, adjacent to the choir, which lists those on the main Roll of Honour who were also choristers at St John's.There are 11 names on that plaque. 11 young men from a small parish church choir. Those dreadful figures do perhaps help to remind us just how devastating a conflict the Great War really was......
