‘The Hampton
Viewer’
Now that Christmas is almost here
and finding gifts is still proving to be a
difficult task, worry no more, we are
here to help. Go to pages 30 and 31
for some great ideas from Flowers to
Pilot Lessons. Also look out for the red
bauble throughout the magazine for
more inspirational gift ideas and
please don’t forget to mention The
Viewer when responding to an advert.
If you would like
to surprise a little one
with a letter from
Santa and help the
NSPCC at the same
time, please go to
page 43, you will
also find on this
page details of all
Christmas Last Postal
Dates for those last
minute Christmas cards.
Also, on the centre pages there is
a calendar for year 2013, all you need
to do is pull this out and pin it on your
board to keep track on your busy
days. Hope you find this helpful!
Finally, I would like to thank all our
readers and advertisers alike for their
support through the year and wish you
all a Merry Christmas and all great
things for the New Year.
Until next time!

Dial M for Murgatroyd. Opens at Peterborough’s Key Theatre on Tues-
day 29th January and runs until February 2nd.
Directed by Eastern Angles’ Christmas writing team; Julian
Harries and Pat Whymark. Dial M for Murgatroyd is a Country
House Murder Mystery spoof with music, physical comedy and
lots of local East Anglian inspired gags. It has been described
to be the alternative to the traditional Christmas panto.
Taking an irreverent look at the world of British Butlers, Toffee-
nosed landed gentry and Agatha Christie-style lady
detectives. Last year’s “Round The Twist” was claimed by
Peterborough Evening Telegraph that “The audience felt part
of the action from the start.
Characters include the pompous Major Fitzall, his batty
bohemian wife, their spineless son, domineering daughter and
of course, Miss Murgatroyd the lady detective with a shrewd
eye, a perceptive mouth, an astute nose and an enormous
stash of depilatory cream!
Things take a turn for the weird when a monkey-shaped beast is spotted in the woods. When
the trusty butler is mysteriously bumped off, the only option left for the impossibly posh Fitzall
family is to Dial M for Murgatroyd!

The Whinge
I’ve Got 99 Problems...
In my seemingly never-ending quest
to achieve the perfect body – an Adonis
carved from marble by the gods them-
selves; or at least to vainly attempt to firm
up some of the more flappy flabby bits,
I’ve taken up spinning.
To those of you who are uninitiated in
the dark art of peddling like a possessed
demon attempting to escape the
murderous intentions of van Hallen
(monster exterminator to the stars),
spinning involves sitting, standing and
jumping on an exercise bike. The spinning
element is the flywheel on the bike to
which you add resistance to simulate hills
and release resistance to simulate
breathing & not falling off in a gibbering
heap crying like a baby.
On my first visit I was spinning away
merrily, thinking “oh this is hard work, but
it can’t be long until we get a rest”.
Hmmm.
After about 7 or 8 minutes of extremely
urgent and exhausting peddling the
instructor calmly announced, that was
the warm-up over and we should now
be ready to start. Warm-up! Warm-up!
*&^%ing right that was over. I couldn’t
possibly be expected to do another 40
minutes even harder than that because,
for a start, I haven’t been given the
opportunity to get my affairs in order.
That first week I managed to get
through, just, and with a few slow
sections where I could try and get some
oxygen back into my body through
every available orifice – which is a
strange feeling indeed. Since then I
have improved and I’m now able to
complete the whole session without my
life flashing before my eyes.
One of the phenomena that I have
become aware of during these sessions is
the choice of musical accompaniment.
It seems to be a bizarre mix of old school
pop and modern rap. In my forays into
clubs, seldom have I witnessed a DJ
moving from Prefab Sprout to Jay Z over
to Tiffany, ABC and then to Transvision
Vamp & Plan B. For the younger readers
you’ll have to ask your parents about the
anthemic but very limited hits of Tranvision
Vamp. The idea of the soundtrack is to
match the pace of the specific exercise,
so faster beats for sprints, slower 80s tunes
for hills.
Sometimes these tunes fit very well
and seem to be perfectly timed to give
the spinners a boost. When the theme
from Rocky comes on you can’t help but
feel invigorated as you picture Sly
pounding the streets in the famous
montage culminating in climbing the
stone steps in triumph. And when She’s A
Maniac by Hall and Oates starts up you
know the sprints are going to be assisted
by the super-charged rhythm.
But when Jay Z starts with “I’ve got 99
problems, but a b* ain’t one” it’s
impossible to think to yourself that right
now as I’m instructed to “turn up the
resistance at least one turn” that it’s all
well and good for xx, but for me, I seem
to have 100 problems and the most
annoying thing is that whilst the whole
class are clinging to their bikes to try and
stay upright, sweating like the proverbial
porcine and huffing and puffing like an
asthmatic stuck in the middle of a corn
field whilst combine harvesters trundle
past throwing dust clouds directly down
the throat of said asthmatic, the
instructor at the front is peddling at twice
the speed of light and is still able to talk
to us all – and worse than that, she smiles
like she’s actually enjoying it.
What an absolute problem number 100!

In The Night Sky #21
T he fireworks continue this month with
the Germinids peeking on the 13th and
14th of the month, hopefully, we’ll
have nice clear skies like those we enjoyed
in November. Further, there won’t be any
moonlight to outshine the show as there’s
a new moon on the 13th.
Apart from meteor showers December
is also an excellent month to observe
Jupiter as it comes into opposition early on
in the month (on the 3rd).
Also Jupiter gets quite
high in the sky this month
so you’ll be able to ob-
serve it for most of the
night. It rises at just after
sunset and doesn’t set
until just before sunrise
at the start of the month,
getting earlier as the
month progresses, but
still offering lots of good
observing opportunities.
Perhaps the best thing
in December is your
opportunity to observe
the strangely mysterious
and elusive planet
Mercury. Because it’s so
close to the Sun it’s quite
rare to get an observing opportunity.
However, this December Mercury will be
at its greatest elongation west early in the
month and early in the morning. The best
time to see it will be on the mornings of the
1st and 2nd, although you will still be able
see it probably as late as the 12th. The im-
age below shows the sky at 0715 on the
morning of the 2nd looking southeast. But
please be careful because the Sun will rise
shortly after this and Mercury will be very
close – don’t look directly at the Sun with
your eyes and be especially careful if your
using a telescope or binoculars.
