As we go to press, it is still 2016, but most will not read this until after the
New Year has dawned: such is an example of the act of hope we practice
every day. We plan and prepare with a vision of what we believe lies ahead.
Sometimes we have clarity of vision and our hope is fulfilled. Sometimes we
are completely caught off guard by what actually happens. In those moments
in which we are knocked off balance by actual events, we are challenged to
consider how we will respond to the unexpected.
2016 has been a year filled with challenges for many of us personally, and all
of us as a church and as a community. We buried a cherished founding
member as well as a man who died far too young. Our community, both
Ooltewah and the wider area of East Tennessee, has been in the national news
in ways we struggle to comprehend with the death of vulnerable children and
the devastating wild fires. We remember the words of Priest and Poet John
Donne (1572 – 1631): “Any man's death diminishes me/ Because I am in-
volved in mankind”.
Still, it is that communal understanding, our deep connections one to another,
which also fill us with hope as 2017 dawns. For this parish family always
rises to support one another within and beyond our church walls. We surround
the grieving with our care and concern, including praying with devastated
families and friends in the hours after the losses. We contributed funds to
provide for the families struggling to move forward, including food for the
funeral receptions for the Woodmore School children, and funds to the
discretionary accounts at Trinity Episcopal Church in Gatlinburg and St.
Joseph the Carpenter in Sevierville.
As we consider our resolutions for the New Year, let us include a resolution
to a deeper commitment to this parish family. God created us as individuals
who need one another including the one who was fully human as well as fully
Divine, Jesus the Christ, in our life. When we gather together, our offerings of
worship, of care, and of service are amplified and multiplied by the grace of
God. Let us all resolve to live more deeply into our call to: Find the Lost;
Heal the Broken; Celebrate God’s Love for All.
May blessings abound for us all in 2017!

To the Rector, Vestry, and Congregation of
St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church,
Your generosity overwhelms me and the words
“Thank You” do not seem adequate; however,
since they are the only words I have at the
moment:
Thank you for the generous gift.
Serving with you is the true gift you give to me
every week and it is one that I thank God for in
my daily prayers. Each and every one of you are
special to me and I look forward to walking with
you on your life's journey in 2017 and beyond.
May we continue to Find the lost; Heal the
broken; and Celebrate God’s love for all, today
and everyday.
Peace,
The Rev. John R. Rouser

In a recent Day By Day reading, it talked about a church in
Connecticut that is shaped on the outside like a paddle
steamer. The inside has a ship’s decor like a bell, cannons,
and other nautical items. It’s a reminder that the church and
our lives are like ships. Even when rocked by winds and
currents, we keep sailing. And even if assailed by storms,
we won’t sink completely because we are sustained by our
faith in the Lord who is our rock and who calms the storms
in our lives.
What a wonderful perspective on how to persevere when
we lack strength to continue. It can sometimes be a
challenge taking care of our own while at the same time
sharing our talents and gifts with others. But sharing
ourselves with others brings true joy as we do God’s work
in our neighborhood, community, and beyond.
As the Joyous Christmas celebration comes to a close, let us
carry the Christmas spirit with us for the entire year
celebrating God’s love for us all and striving to do God’s
will in our lives.
Find the lost; Heal the broken; Celebrate Gods love for all.
Greg Love
