Market Requirement for Standards• Standards assist in creating a verifiable quality framework
• Many data centres make claims about their data centre facility. BUT how to prove it…
– World-Class, 5-Star, Class-A, Grade-A
• Incorrect claims on Rating levels (1 – 4)
• Outsourced data centre owners are in need to have certification to prove their claims
– External and internal justification
– Shorten the sales cycle
– Marketing advantage
• Enterprise data centre owners are in need to have certification to set the right expectations to the business in terms of availability, capability and capacity

Why ANSI/TIA-942?
• There are some very clear advantages of benchmarking and certifying your data centre based on this standard, to name a few;
– ANSI/TIA-942 is a TRUE STANDARD issued by a Standard issuing body. It is governed by ANSI which ensures that the process of creating and maintaining the standard is done via a proper open process. Some so-called standards are often written by commercial companies
– ANSI/TIA-942 is an OPEN STANDARD. The specifications/requirements of the standard are public.

Why ANSI/TIA-942
• ANSI/TIA-942 does not only address power and cooling. The standard addresses all aspects of the data centre such as Site Location, Architecture, Security, Safety, Fire Suppression, Power, Cooling & Telecommunication.
• ANSI/TIA-942 is the most COST EFFECTIVEconformity certification

Certification Body
• Is the audit organization a registered Certification Body?
– EPI is a certification body (CB) and EPI is registered under the government law of Singapore.
– The registration number is 201604198G
– EPI is a certification body for Data Centre and IT Audit Services
• It is important that the audit organization is a registered Certification Body (CB) which ensures they follow due process and are legally allowed to issue certificates

The adoption of ANSI/TIA-942 standard• Over 6,000 copies sold…
• Downloads done in more than 90 countries, number of downloads per month is growing fast
• It is a REAL standard
– Written by a non-profit Standards organisation
– Open/Publicly available
– Addresses ALL areas (Telecom, Electrical, Mechanical, Architecture) of the data centre
– Customers know what you have done when you are compliant…

Rating (a.k.a Tier) levels
• Rating levels for data centres provides levels of businesses availability expectations
• Level Expected outcome
Rated-1 Base line availability
Rated-2 Improved availability due to addition of redundant
components to critical parts of the infrastructure
Rated-3 Concurrent Maintainable; data centre can undergo
any form of maintenance without the need to
shutdown (concurrently maintainable) which supports
24x7 operations
Rated-4 Fault Tolerant; allows concurrent maintainability and
one (1) fault anywhere in the installation without
causing downtime (Fault Tolerant)
Note: Actual availability also relies on many other aspects such as processes, maintenance, training, security etc.

Issues Facing Today’s DC Operations
• Data centres often wonder
– Which processes should we have?
– To what level of detail should we go?
– What are proper control mechanisms?
– Controlled/automated and to what level?
• Until now there was no world-wide standard, not even a semi-standard or guideline

Why Optimize DC Operations?• A large portion of data centre downtime /
unavailability is caused by maintenance and operational processes = Human Error
• Example of Human Errors
– Reliance on people rather than process
– Maturity of process (too little / too much)
– Lack of (process) integration
– Lack of coordination
– Shift handover
– Inadequate proficiency levels of staff
– Lack of process improvement
– Human resource management

Improvement Plans
• Depending on the gaps identified, the customer can develop an improvement plan
• Improvement plans should:
– Be targeted first at the most important gaps based on business requirements
– Be realistic in terms of timelines
– Adequate resources should be allocated
– Validate the adequate implementation of the improved discipline
• Remember; Improvement processes are gradual. It’s journey and not a quick fix.
