Dear Friends,
I am writing this letter on the day that Theresa May has announced her intention to call a general election for 8th June. This is obviously a big surprise to everyone in the UK and appears even to have wrong-footed the political commentators. It has been a very difficult year since the EU Referendum campaign and result and the election campaign ahead now looks likely to raise many complicated and potentially divisive issues. The way a democratic society makes decisions is itself complex and the relationship between the government and the people is finely balanced. Arguably, all our democratic processes are a continual negotiation of the ongoing adjustment of this subtle partnership between those who lead and those who are led. We all have responsibilities in this, and I urge you to take them seriously and prayerfully as you prepare to vote on 8th June.
The church is also both a community and an institution. We live and worship together as a people which gathers informally each week around different events and focal points and which keeps in touch through a variety of ways. If you haven’t got into it yet, do check out one of the newest of these on our Oakwood Church twitter feed (@oakwoodchurchls). We are a community, but also an institution – by this I mean that we have a democratic way of governing ourselves and making decisions. It’s
not as complex or divisive as the general election, though we do take our responsibilities seriously and prayerfully, even if with a fair pinch of humour and humility! Later in the magazine, you can read Kathryn’s summary of the Annual Church Meeting in April – out of this annual meeting flows the Leadership Team and the Church Council, which in turn tasks a range of teams to get on with overseeing things in the name of the church.
What actually happens though, and the way things actually get done, is down to all of us as the people of the church doing our bit. The relationship between the community and the leadership system is subtle and finely balanced. Kathryn’s article also explains the way that the Church Council is reviewing progress with our three current church priorities – you are the people who are the church, so please have a look and take part in this.
Many of the issues which will form the substance of the general election are ones which, as Christians, we seek to take a view on, and to take action over. The church does not support any particular political party, but we do seek to encourage all who work for the common good of our society and the world, but also to call them to account for the sake of justice and to ensure care for all, especially the weakest and most vulnerable. I think my key message for life together as a church, as a community and as a society, is “please join in” – take up your responsibilities and help with the process of decision making. In Christian tradition we talk about discernment. This is a bigger concept, which includes us making a decision, but only in the light of our efforts to seek the will of God, and to consider the future from God’s perspective.
Paul, of course, puts it better than I can:
“And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1: 9-11)
With prayers for your discernment as the election campaign unfolds,
Yours in Christ, George
Ordination as Priest
Sonia has been with us for a year now. On Saturday 24 June at 15.00, at a service in Leeds Minster, she will be ordained priest by Bishop Paul Slater.
It would be good to give Sonia support from the parish at this significant occasion in her life. If you wish to attend, please could you let Sonia know as admission is by ticket.
Sonia will preside at her first Communion Service at Oakwood on Sunday 2 July.
Next month Sonia will be writing on what it means for her to be a priest in the Church of England.
Please pray for Sonia and all who are called to ordination in both the Methodist and Anglican Churches.
Church Family News
We give thanks for the long life of Mr John S Hewitt who passed away peacefully in hospital on 23 February 2017. John was a former organist at both Roundhay Methodist Church and St John's Church and a friend to many people. His funeral service was held at Oakwood Church on Tuesday 21 March. We send our sympathy to his son John, daughter Margaret and relatives and continue to hold them in our prayers and love.
We welcomed into our church family by Baptism during February Tobias and Oliver Roberts and during March Lucas Pinder.
We hold Tobias, Oliver, Lucas, their parents and families, godparents and church sponsors in our prayers and promise our support and love now and in the future.
Coffee Morning Saturday 6 May from 10.00 to 12.00
in aid of Home and Overseas Methodist Missions
Please do join us for bacon butties, pain au chocolat, pain au raisin, toasted teacakes and hot drinks as we endeavour to raise money for Methodist Missions.
We will also have our usual cake, book and bric-a-brac stalls for you to browse and a raffle.
Methodist Missions support a huge variety of projects at home and overseas. The following is an extract from the magazine Mission Matters, and is an example of how our donations can help.
"I had the privilege of visiting Brunswick Methodist Church in Swansea on a blustery Monday evening in July. I was introduced to Huw and Cerys Davies, who coordinate a drop-in centre for homeless people and addicts.
Dubbed “Ogof Adullam” after the cave of Adullam where David took refuge from King Saul (see 1 Samuel 22), they and 36 volunteers offer a place of refuge to those in need.
It was a whirlwind of an evening. Before they started, the volunteers gathered for prayer. I was touched to see how deeply Huw, Cerys and the volunteers cared for each client. As the clients arrived, I met men and women of all ages, from individuals suffering with severe schizophrenia to heroin users and people struggling with alcohol. In contrast to such chaotic lives, the lower room at Brunswick Methodist Church provided a peaceful oasis."
If anyone could help on the day, bake a cake or some buns, donate a raffle prize or something for the book or bric-a-brac stalls we would be very grateful.
The Charity Giving Team
Sharing the Good News of Jesus
On 6 April we had the first ever joint Anglican and Methodist Annual Meetings at Oakwood Church.
This was a milestone as it demonstrates how closely the two entities of Roundhay St John’s and Roundhay Methodist churches are now working together as Oakwood Church.
We each did the legal necessities and then, as one body, reflected on what had been done in the name of Jesus over the last year. Written reports aren’t always exciting ... but it was great to hear the developments and new initiatives that have taken place in 2016.
Highlights include the implementation of the new Church Contacts and Visitors system, Oakwood Book Club, new bibles, hymnbooks and carpets, new contemporary worship - Branching Out in Praise as well as the steady undergirding of our corporate life through Sunday Morning worship, charity giving, home groups, social activities and building maintenance.
Thank you to everyone involved.
We also took time to reflect on our Mission priorities. You may remember that in summer 2015 we undertook a process to give a direction to our church life both internally and externally. Many groups and individuals participated and the Church Council drew out three priorities.
• Prayer in the life of the church. • Diversity, greater inclusion for non-traditional family
groups, e.g. Singles, those without Children, younger people in their 20’s.
• Greater Youth participation in decision making.
There was a buzz in the room as people talked in pairs as to how they had been involved in these priorities over the last 18 months.
In different ways, in different groups the life of the church has been invigorated by having these priorities as a focus.
The Church Council is wanting to review the priorities, to check out with the church family whether they are still the appropriate priorities, to hear whether things have happened that mean priorities should be modified or changed or whether we have done all we can at this time in one particular area.
There will be opportunities at services and other times to let us know how you have engaged. These will be gathered up to be taken to a special meeting of the Church Council on 14 May.
Please take the opportunity to tell clergy, wardens, stewards, church council members how you have been involved in these priorities.
Paul uses the metaphor of the body in his second letter to the Corinthians. “You are the Body of Christ and individually members of it.” As Oakwood Church we are an expression of the Body of Christ and each one of us is part of it. Everyone’s view is important to the Church Council as we look to God’s future.
Paul also writes “there are varieties of gifts but the same Spirit; there are varieties of services but the same Lord and there are varieties of activities but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone”. We all have a part to play, whatever our age, gifts or abilities as we continue to share the Good News of Jesus in our community.

We usually meet once each month, usually on
Saturday afternoon from 16.00 to 17.30

Activities are suitable for families with children of all ages. Join together in family craft and creative activities with biblical reference.
Enjoy uninterrupted time with your children and meet new people in a safe and friendly environment.
Sessions end with a bring-and-share tea.

Nejebar’s Story
Nejebar doesn’t have a safe place to call home
Nejebar fled Afghanistan with her family after the Taliban threatened to kill her husband, Noor, who was a teacher. It wasn’t an idle threat - the Taliban first blinded, then murdered, another member of their family.
‘The last days and weeks in Afghanistan were the hardest,’ says Noor. ‘When I went to work, my heart was beating harder. I didn’t know if my family were going to be alive when I got back.’
Nejebar’s family is stuck in Greece
When the family arrived at the refugee camp in Greece, they thought they would only stay for 10 days. But they’ve been there six months now and there’s no end in sight.
The only protection they have against the wind and rain is their tent. There’s no school for their children. Five-year-old Sudai, their youngest, is ill, but Nejebar and Noor don’t know what’s wrong with him because they can’t communicate with the camp’s doctor, who is Greek.
Everyone should have a safe place to call home.
Nejebar’s hope for the future
Nejebar is the rock at the centre of her family, holding them together throughout all this uncertainty. She has even welcomed Faraidoon and Farzad into the family, two brothers who don’t know where their parents are, or if they’re even alive.
‘We still have some hope for our children’s future,’ says Nejebar. ‘We only want a peaceful life. We want our children to go to school. The most important thing is our children.’

Wide Awake Breakfast and Car Wash
in aid of
Transform Purulia Hospital
We were living dangerously when we chose Saturday 1 April for our fundraising event but we are not superstitious!
Breakfasts were on the go from 09.00 as was the car washing. The stalls were extremely well supported and we were so grateful to everyone who gave their help so willingly.
The total raised was £606.02 (including a generous £60.00 donation from the Monday Cafe!
Fundraising can be quite hard work and can only be achieved when we have the lo9ve of the Lord, who is there with us, as we try to care for His people.
May God bless you all.
Peggy, Sharon and Shanthi
A letter of thanks has been received from a doctor at the hospital, a copy of which is on the charity noticeboard at the back of Church (please take a look) and an excerpt of which is below.
"As I finished my ward rounds at the hospital this morning, I went on to the busy outpatients' department. It was crowded and chaotic and, as I was navigating my way through, I had a big smile on my face. Scanning through the crowds, I saw men, women and children with their baggage tired after a long journey to the hospital standing in a queue. My heart goes out to them.
But, today, I am optimistic. Because of you, our brothers and sisters in the UK, we can look forward to a fantastic new outpatients' department for people who are affected by leprosy."

The P Table (the 'P' stands for preserves)
The P Table makes jams jellies and chutneys and all the proceeds go to the church or other charities.
We run on a very simple system. Whatever fruit is given we will add sugar, vinegar, spices, salt and
pepper.
All the fruit is donated and thanks must go to the
following people who helped last year - Barbara,
Barry, Heather, John, Jeanette, Mike, Richard, Roger,
Sylvia and Viv.
We do not grow oranges and lemons in Roundhay so
one friend buys these for us.
£32.00 worth of these produces marmalade and
raises over £250.00!
If you like strawberries, raspberries or mangos
please buy these and we will make jams and sauces
which are often asked for.
We're all set to produce more preserves. If you could
provide any of the following we would be really
grateful -
rhubarb, gooseberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants,

cooking apples, crab apples, pears, plums, damsons, greengages, quince and sloes!
Last year we heard of apples rolling down the street. What a waste.
Thank you for your support. Martin Shipley

At our Meeting Point 'Holiday Extra' during the Easter holiday finger-painted Easter cards, bunny-ears, headbands, iced Easter buns, hatching chickens, gem-decorated crosses, chick and rabbit finger-puppets, wool-wrapped egg decorations and Easter egg mobiles were made by the children who attended. We had five mums come along with 15 children but, unfortunately, almost all of them understood so little English that we were unable to gain consent for taking photos. We were delighted that the language barrier didn't prevent the attendees from enjoying doing the crafts.

House Groups
Early Methodist gatherings were called 'societies'.
John Wesley encouraged different kinds of small
group to develop, so that both leaders and members of the societies could receive support and challenge
in their faith.
These groups, called 'classes', met regularly, and the
idea was to be accountable to each other about how
each person was living the Christian life. So people
had to be very open and willing to be changed by the
experience.
In the twentieth century it became less common for
classes to meet in this way but recently many
Methodists have been trying to reclaim the tradition.
The supportive small group has been found to be one
of the most powerful ways for people to feel that they
belong, and to learn, grow and expand their opportunities for Christian conversation about the
things that matter.
